Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to perform individualized, goal-directed nursing care through the nursing process and the principles of team nursing in accordance with Pain Physicians of Wisconsin, S.C. (PPW) policies and procedures. This position will assess patient health problems and needs, develop and implement care plans, and maintain medical records while administering nursing care to adult patients in the perioperative areas of the ambulatory surgery center.

Responsibilities
  • Provides skilled nursing care under the direction of the RN Charge Nurse or RN Manager.
  • Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans using specialized clinical and surgical equipment.
  • Observes and documents patients  clinical and educational needs to complete the nursing assessment and provide care.
  • Conducts surveillance for infection control risks in the ASC and monitors hand hygiene compliance.
  • Participates in Universal Protocol/surgical time-out processes by confirming correct patient, procedure, site, and other safety checks with two patient identifiers.
  • Maintains patient safety, protects privacy, and preserves patient dignity.
  • Effectively communicates with all physicians and staff members.
  • Monitors, records, and reports patient clinical information and vital signs accurately.
  • Educates patients, families, and groups on health concerns and pre-, intra-, and post-operative care needs.
  • Assists pre/post procedure by preparing the patient for procedure, correctly identifying patient and procedure, updating medications and allergy profiles, and documenting vital signs, pain status, and health concerns. Performs pre- and post-operative teaching and reviews consent forms and orders for accuracy. Uses the five rights of medication administration and documents modified Aldrete and discharge scores. Assists in discharge with appropriate paperwork and strong communication and teaching skills.
  • Performs chart review daily to ensure completeness and accuracy of documentation in the medical record.
  • Participates in team peer review processes, reviewing nursing documentation and providing feedback according to organizational processes.
  • Supports Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement initiatives as a member of the ASC team.
  • In the OR:
    Supervises and directs patient care in a single operating room, identifies the patient and correct surgical intervention, and communicates information to all members of the surgical team. Explains intraoperative phases and care to the patient. Administers sedation under physician supervision by following verbal orders and nursing assessment/critical thinking. Documents intraoperative phase and medication administration in the EHR and controlled substance logs.

    Applies and monitors aseptic techniques throughout the intraoperative period. Ensures all necessary equipment is available and ready. Efficiently turns over rooms between patients following proper cleaning techniques. Communicates any breaches of aseptic technique to the physician and circulating nurse.
  • C-Arm:
    Completes and maintains appropriate radiation training and competencies. Assists in minimizing radiation exposure, maintains radiological equipment and badge usage, and documents fluoroscopy usage and image handling as determined by site and C-arm requirements.
  • Triage:
    Communicates with physicians regarding patient care needs, documents accurately in the EHR, creates encounters as needed, and updates medication modules. Communicates assessment of patient needs with providers.
  • Preceptor:
    Communicates with other employees to teach and direct them in job responsibilities; coordinates with the manager regarding trainee progress. Monitors trainees and ensures supervision until independent performance is achieved. Participates in orientation and supports trainee independence and success. Assists trainees in completing required competencies and skill checklists.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Successful completion of an accredited Registered Nursing program with current and unrestricted RN license.
  • At least five years of related experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational, judgment, communication, and analytical skills; ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities.
