Senior Systems Software Engineer

Position Overview

Senior Systems Software Engineer at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, Franklin, WI.

Collaborate with product, engineering, and design teams to modernize infrastructure provisioning. Participate in all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) including requirements gathering, design, development, testing, deployment and maintenance. Engage in Agile practices, attending weekly refinement meetings to align technical features with business requirements. Design, build and maintain relational databases (Aurora, PostgreSQL, MySQL) optimizing data query performance. Develop and deploy containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes, ensuring efficient deployment and management.

Monitor live systems, fix bugs, and develop new features while maintaining comprehensive documentation. Provide technical leadership through design and code reviews, mentoring junior engineers, and exploring new capabilities. Automate infrastructure security auditing and CIS hardening standards. Utilize programming languages and technologies such as Python, Power Shell, Java, SQL, XML and JSON to address technical issues and develop new features. Improve system resiliency via cloud services (AWS or Azure).

Apply expertise in Git source control and CI/CD practices to automate deployment pipelines. Lead identification and resolution of technical problems to ensure platform resiliency and operational excellence. Maintain a continuous integration and continuous development (CI/CD) pipeline to support ongoing software delivery. Conduct root-cause analysis and ensure production stability and monitoring of the platform. Connect technical direction with business metrics such as latency, reliability and cost efficiency to demonstrate strategic impact.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering or a related field and 5 years of experience as a systems engineer, software developer or related occupation.

• Monitoring and performance management and tuning of systems
• Networking and Linux-based platforms
• Modern programming and scripting languages including Python and Java Script
• Linux and Windows operating systems, including installation, configuration, and management in CLI
• Terraform and Cloud Formation
• Dev Ops, CI/CD, Git Ops, and Agile methodologies
• CI/CD pipelines and automation (Git Lab CI, Jenkins, Code Pipeline, or CircleCI)
• Firewalls, vulnerability management, authentication and authorization
• Unit testing
