Position Summary

The Equipment Operator I/II/III plays a vital role in supporting Public Works operations by maintaining and improving the Town’s infrastructure, facilities, and essential services. This position performs a variety of maintenance, construction, repair, and equipment operation activities, including street maintenance, utility support, stormwater operations, snow and ice control, and emergency response.

These positions operates a variety of vehicles, tools, and equipment while performing assigned maintenance activities and supporting daily field operations. Equipment Operators work as part of a team to complete projects safely and efficiently, respond to changing operational needs, and provide dependable services that support the community.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Operator I:
  • Performs routine maintenance, repair, and construction activities related to streets, roadways, rights-of-way, stormwater systems, and other municipal infrastructure under guidance.
  • Assists with pothole repair, grading, drainage maintenance, street sweeping, mowing, debris removal, and other Public Works activities.
  • Assists with water utility maintenance, including repairs, valve operations, utility locates, excavation, and emergency response.
  • Operates assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment after completing required training and demonstrating safe operating practices.
  • Assists with snow and ice control operations, including plowing, sanding, deicing, and manual snow removal.
  • Performs routine equipment inspections, cleaning, fueling, and operator-level maintenance.
  • Performs traffic control and flagging duties as assigned.
  • Completes work orders, equipment logs, and maintenance records.
  • Responds to after-hours, emergency, and on-call assignments as required.
Equipment Operator II:
  • Independently performs skilled maintenance, repair, and construction activities related to streets, roadways, right-of-way, stormwater systems, water utilities, and other municipal infrastructure.
  • Operates a variety of trucks, snowplows, loaders, skid steers, tractors, sweepers, and other equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Performs complex roadway, drainage, utility, and infrastructure maintenance activities with limited supervision.
  • Performs water utility maintenance, including repairs, excavation, valve operations, utility locates, and emergency response activities.
  • Performs snow and ice control operations independently and responds to changing weather and operational conditions.
  • Performs equipment inspections, preventive maintenance, and identifies equipment issues requiring repair.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains street signs, traffic control devices, and other Public Works infrastructure.
  • Maintains accurate work records, equipment logs, and work orders using computerized systems.
  • Provides guidance and support for less experienced employees.
  • Responds to emergencies, after-hours, and on-call assignments as needed.
Equipment Operator III:
  • Performs advanced maintenance, repair, construction, and operational activities involving streets, roadways, stormwater systems, water utilities, and other municipal infrastructure.
  • Operates specialized and heavy equipment requiring advanced proficiency and technical knowledge.
  • Leads complex maintenance activities, troubleshooting efforts, and field operations requiring independent judgment.
