Summary:
We are looking for a diligent oral surgery assistant to support our oral surgeon before, during, and after each dental procedure. To be successful as an oral surgery assistant, you should be highly organized and attentive to patients' needs. An outstanding oral surgery assistant should have an excellent understanding of oral surgery procedures and exceptional hand-eye coordination.
Surgical Responsibilities:- Take alginate impressions
- Perform vitality tests
- Prepare temporary crowns
- Remove excess cement
- Proper instrument cleaning in accordance with infection control and biohazard protocols.
- Autoclave operation and function.
- Surgical tray set-up.
- Identification of instruments used in the clinic.
- Room set up/break down for IV anesthesia and surgery.
- Seat patient and perform pre-op set-up.
- Review charts.
- Nitrous oxide set-up.
- Take x-rays
- Proper positioning of restraints
- Support airway for sedated patients
- Demonstrate patient calming techniques
- Ability to circulate and retrieve instruments
- Monitor patients post anesthesia
- Assess if patients need to see a doctor
- Understand emergency procedures and operation of emergency equipment
- Perform daily, weekly, and quarterly preventative maintenance on instruments, equipment, and headpieces
- Provide excellent patient care
- Familiar with all forms and handouts (procedure-based, consent forms, etc.).
- Aware of and in compliance with OSHA requirements (e.g. personal protection)
- Greet patients and make them feel comfortable.
- Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, filing, and charting.
- Perform patient consultations.
- Make follow up phone calls to patients.
- Take X-Rays / scans.
- Enter EMR notes for various appointments and procedures.
- Properly closing and opening the office each day (Tanks, Suction, Xray)
- Back-up co-workers as needed.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- High school diploma/GED.
- Dental radiography training meeting DC requirements. [dchealth.dc.gov]
- EITHER:
- Graduation from a CODA-accredited dental assisting program, OR
- Current DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification (or another Board-approved certification). [dchealth.dc.gov]
- Current CPR/BLS certification required.
- Great organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to provide excellent patient care, even under stressful circumstances.
- Consistent professionalism in appearance and attitude.
- Current Level II DC Dental Assisting licensure heavily preferred.
- Monday – Friday, 8 hour shift
- Training 2 to 3 weeks in Rockville, MD or until DC Licensure is obtained

- Working on-site is essential to the function of this position.
- Must be able to stand up to 80% of the time at minimum.
- Physical requirements include sitting, stooping, turning, standing, bending, walking, hearing, reading, writing, and keyboarding, may lift up to 25 lbs.
