Introduction
Anticipated opening for the 2026‑2027 School Year. Main Purpose of JobTo develop and implement a bilingual educational program for Deaf students in a language accessible environment as well as provide an enriched bicultural environment conducive to the development of the optimal social and emotional growth of Deaf students. To provide a language enriched environment through use of sign language and printed word to meet the varied needs of Deaf Students.
POSITION DUTIES- Plan, deliver, and assess classroom instruction and hands‑on lab experiences in areas such as food preparation and presentation, diverse cuisines, nutrition and healthy eating, baking, hospitality, culinary terminology, kitchen management, culinary industry practices, hospitality and safety and sanitation.
- Design and make materials to facilitate student learning.
- Integrate bilingual and visual instructional strategies that support language access and comprehension for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students, including collaboration with interpreters as needed.
- Facilitate real‑world culinary experiences through school catering events, pop‑up kitchens, and internships, guiding students in professional standards of food service, teamwork, and customer interaction.
- Supervise and mentor students during on‑campus events and off‑site culinary experiences and student internships to ensure safe, high‑quality, and educational practices.
- Manage and operate the Veditz Caf, providing students with opportunities to apply culinary and business skills while serving teachers, staff, and visitors during regular hours and special events.
- Deliver Serv Safe instruction and certification, ensuring students understand and demonstrate food safety standards required by the industry.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized commercial kitchen environment that meets local health codes and supports effective learning.
- Develop and maintain weekly lesson plans aligned to course standards and expectations, using student data and assessments to differentiate instruction and promote mastery of culinary competencies.
- Implement IEP accommodations and supplementary aids, collecting data and collaborating with support staff to monitor progress and ensure equitable access.
- Coordinate and coach students for the Deaf Culinary Bowl (DCB) and other competitions, fostering leadership, creativity, and pride in their culinary skills.
- Promote a positive, inclusive classroom culture that encourages creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and respect for diverse cuisines and cultures.
Education:
Bachelor's degree required. Candidates must be eligible to apply for or be willing to obtain licensure by the Maryland State Department of Education and Serv Safe certification within a prescribed amount of time. Fluency in American Sign Language and written English required. Knowledge of the deaf culture, deaf education, students with additional disabilities, and ability to teach students on different levels and with varying educational and language acquisition backgrounds is required.
OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in Education or special education of Deaf students, Maryland State Department of Education Certification. Experience/knowledge in pastry/baking. Vocational experience in the culinary arts industry and/or experience in K‑12 culinary arts instruction and certification in Serv Safe preferred.
