The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services is seeking passionate and compassionate education professionals to join our team at local government youth education facilities. This unique opportunity allows you to help vulnerable youth overcome obstacles and unlock their full potential by providing guidance, support, and education.
Key Responsibilities- Create a supportive learning environment where students feel respected, valued, and motivated to learn.
- Develop and deliver engaging instruction tailored to diverse learning styles and abilities.
- Employ effective teaching strategies and technologies to enhance student engagement.
- Monitor and support student progress through formative and summative assessments.
- Collaborate with social workers, counselors, administrators, and other professionals to address individual student challenges.
- Promote restorative practices and conflict‑resolution techniques to foster accountability and personal growth.
- Serve as a mentor and role model, encouraging positive behavior and resilience.
- Engage with families and guardians to provide updates on academic performance and behavior.
- Stay informed on educational best practices to continually refine teaching methods.
- Commit to professional growth through development opportunities and training.
Education:
Possession of appropriate educational credentials as determined by the Maryland State Board of Education.
Must possess an active Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) secondary education educator license.
Desired orPreferred Qualifications
- Active licensure in one or more content areas such as English, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, ESOL, Career and Technical Education, or School Counseling.
- A minimum of one year of teaching experience, including internship experience.
- Current active certification issued by the Maryland State Department of Education.
Teachers in state‑operated programs must acquire and maintain certification to teach in Maryland per Education Article, Section 6‑101 of the Annotated Code and Code of Maryland Regulations. Applicants will be required to complete an Authorization and Verification of Credentials. Additional educational credits beyond the Advanced Professional Certificate must meet Institutional Educators Pay Plan Committee criteria.
Special Requirements- Substance abuse testing as outlined in COMAR 17.04.09.
- State Police and Child Protective Services investigations/background checks.
- Proof of eligibility to work in the United States as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
- Conditional Maryland teaching certificate; employment will be terminated if certification is not obtained or maintained.

- Cheltenham Youth Detention Center – Prince George’s County
- Garrett Children’s Center (temporarily closed) – Garrett County
- Green Ridge Youth Center – Allegany County
- Lower Eastern Shore Children’s Center – Wicomico County
- Victor Cullen Center – Frederick County
- Western Maryland Children’s Center – Washington County
