Graduate STEM Technical Editor; Contingent II

Job Summary

Graduate STEM Technical Editor (Contingent II) – non‑regular fixed term, full‑time. Supports graduate students in academic writing, focusing on technical documents, ensuring clarity, accuracy, style, and communication of complex technical information. Works closely with faculty and graduate administration.

• Develop relationships with faculty/program directors to establish optimal writing approaches.
• Serve a diverse student community, including non‑native language writers, assisting improvement at master’s and doctoral levels.
• Ensure student documents meet BSU Graduate School guidelines, organizing writing assignments for conciseness, style, and terminology.
• Maintain a project log of documents, records, and files; collaborate with staff as part of a team.
• Review and edit technical documents for clarity, grammar, punctuation, accuracy, and adherence to style guidelines.
• Collaborate with subject matter experts to confirm technical accuracy, validate data, calculations, and experimental results.
• Apply formatting and style guidelines (APA, IEEE, Chicago); standardize headings, tables, figures, references.
• Assist in structuring technical content for clarity; provide constructive feedback to improve writing skills.
• Manage multiple editing projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery and meeting deadlines.
• Conduct final reviews to ensure quality before publication.
• Maintain best practices for technical editing and documentation.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, participate in meetings to understand project requirements.
• Deliver writing services and resources, including workshops and dissertation editing.
• Stay current with best practices in graduate education, attend relevant conferences and training.

• Master’s degree in a STEM field (e.g., Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics).
• 5 years of professional experience in writing, editing, and formatting academic materials.
• Experience with reference management tools (End Note, Zotero) is a plus.
• Proficiency in editing tools/software (MS Word, LaTeX, Adobe Acrobat).

• Terminal degree (PhD).
• Prior experience in academic editing or publishing.

COVID‑19 vaccinations are not required but strongly encouraged. Occasional travel may be required for meetings, conferences, or training. Flexible schedule to meet graduate student needs. Position is grant‑funded; continuation depends on grant funding.
