Position Overview

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full‑time, 12‑month, tenure‑track faculty position as Assistant/Associate Professor – Anatomy. The position is responsible for the development and delivery of anatomy instruction within the DVM curriculum, including gross anatomy, histology, embryology, and comparative vertebrate anatomy. The faculty member will contribute to curriculum integration, scholarly activity, student mentorship, and service in support of the School’s mission and AVMA COE accreditation standards.

Salary and Benefits

Salary range: $130,000 – $155,000 annually, commensurate with academic rank and experience.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver professional‑level courses and laboratory sessions in gross anatomy, histology, embryology, and comparative anatomy.
  • Integrate clinical correlations into anatomy instruction to enhance student clinical reasoning.
  • Utilize active‑learning strategies, team‑based learning, and digital anatomy resources.
  • Develop course objectives, assessments, and evaluation tools aligned with program competencies.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade written and practical examinations.
  • Oversee anatomy laboratory operations, including cadaver procurement, safety compliance, and specimen preparation.
  • Collaborate in horizontal and vertical curriculum integration within the DVM curriculum.
  • Engage in scholarly activity and research consistent with School expectations.
  • Mentor veterinary students in research and professional development.
  • Participate in departmental, School, and University committees.
  • Contribute to AVMA COE accreditation documentation and compliance activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • DVM/VMD or PhD in Anatomy, Comparative Anatomy, Veterinary Biomedical Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in gross anatomy and vertebrate morphology.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness or strong potential for excellence in teaching.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaborative skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Board certification or eligibility (e.g., American College of Veterinary Anatomists).
  • Residency training in veterinary anatomy.
  • Experience teaching in a veterinary medical curriculum.
  • Record of scholarly activity or educational research.
  • Experience with AVMA COE accreditation processes.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to participate in laboratory instruction involving cadaver dissection, including lifting and maneuvering anatomical specimens and laboratory materials.
  • Strong computer skills.
Physical Demands
  • May require extended periods of standing, bending, stooping, sitting at desk.
  • May require lifting.
  • Requires communication with a variety of constituents externally and internally.
  • Requires operation of a variety of office equipment.
