Job Description

Position Purpose

The Elementary Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering high-quality, evidence-based instruction in a learning environment that fosters the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of every student. This role is dedicated to achieving the goals of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future and the mission of Somerset County Public Schools to ensure every student is college and career-ready.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Instructional Excellence:
    Delivers curriculum aligned with Maryland College and Career Ready Standards and the Blueprint for Maryland's Future.
  • Evidence-Based Literacy:
    Implements instructional practices aligned with the Science of Reading (particularly for Early Childhood/Elementary roles).
  • Data-Driven Decision Making:
    Regularly diagnoses student learning needs using formative and summative assessments to prescribe targeted interventions and accelerations.
  • Differentiation:
    Effectively differentiates instruction to meet the diverse needs of learners, including English Language Learners and students with IEPs/504 plans.
  • Technological Integration:
    Utilizes Learning Management Systems and interactive educational technology as integral tools for instruction and student engagement.
  • Classroom Culture:
    Establishes a restorative and inclusive classroom environment with clear, fair procedures that promote positive behavior and student agency.
  • Collaborative Practice:
    Actively participates in Professional Learning Communities and school improvement teams to analyze data and refine instructional strategies.
  • Communication:
    Maintains proactive, transparent, and professional communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress and well-being.
  • Compliance:
    Maintains accurate, digital records of student attendance, grades, and progress in accordance with Maryland law and SCPS policy.
Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty at a high level.

  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, or a related field.
  • Certification:
    Holds (or is eligible for) a Maryland State Professional Educator Certificate with the appropriate Elementary or Early Childhood endorsement. Candidates enrolled in a Maryland-approved Alternative Preparation Program will be considered.
  • Blueprint Knowledge:
    Familiarity with the pillars of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, specifically regarding high-quality instruction and equity.
Skills and Abilities
  • Digital Literacy:
    Proficiency in Microsoft 365, Google Workspace for Education, and student information systems.
  • Interpersonal

    Skills:

    Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse staff, students, and community partners.
  • Problem Solving:
    Ability to adapt to the evolving needs of the classroom and apply creative solutions.
  • Professionalism:
    Commitment to continuous professional growth, ethical conduct, and maintaining a valid teaching certificate.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Physical Stamina:
    Regularly required to stand, walk, and engage with students at their level. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Environment:
    Ability to maintain focus in a moderately active and noisy environment typical of an elementary school setting.
  • Adaptability:
    Ability to perform duties in person and, if necessary, via hybrid or virtual learning platforms.

Position Type: Full-Time
Salary: $52,018 to $96,181 Per Year
