Job Overview
Para‑professional Library Associate positions are available in Adult Services, Children Services, Teen Services, or as a Generalist across Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL). The role provides comprehensive library services and programs for all patrons and participates in a wide range of library activities and operations. This position is maintained under the Department Head, Assistant Branch Manager, or Branch Manager and may serve as the person‑in‑charge (PIC) of the branch.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Develop and present innovative, age‑appropriate programs and outreach activities.
- Maintain in‑depth knowledge of the library collection and current literature.
- Assist patrons of all ages with reference questions, readers’ advisory requests, and information‑source navigation.
- Perform basic bibliographic searches for inter‑library loan requests and reserves.
- Explain FCPL policies and procedures to patrons and train patrons on the use of library resources.
- Assist with maintenance of the branch collection in an assigned area.
- Collaborate with the supervisor to plan and implement marketing activities and outreach communications.
- Promote the library in the community through engagement and partnership with business, organizations, and schools.
- Prepare displays and develop programs to promote reading and library services.
- Recommend materials for acquisition or withdrawal.
- Provide front‑desk customer service, including check‑in and check‑out of materials.
- Participate in department, branch, and system‑wide work teams and attend workshops, meetings, and learning opportunities.
- May perform duties as a Passport Acceptance Agent and/or Notary Public as required.
- Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university.
- At least 1 year of customer‑service experience working directly with the public.
- Obtain and maintain Library Associate certification from the Maryland State Library Agency; willingness to attend applicable training.
- May require Passport Acceptance Agent certification within 180 days of hire and maintain certification.
- Working knowledge of public library practices, procedures, and research techniques.
- Knowledge of age‑appropriate literature, development stages, and patron interests.
- Proficiency with standard computer applications, tablets/mobile devices, and e‑format materials.
- Working knowledge of social‑media tools and effective online communication.
- Ability to develop and conduct programs, events, and activities for patrons of all ages.
- Ability to access and utilize FCPL’s computerized systems and the Internet, and to provide related instruction.
- Ability to integrate emerging technologies and STEM‑related educational tools into programming.
- Strong written and spoken English communication skills.
- May require Notary certification within 90 days of hire.
- Six or more months of recent library experience (within the last 5 years).
- Completion of coursework toward a Master of Library Science degree or an earned degree.
- One or more years of experience developing and presenting programs to the public.
- Current FCPL employee.
- Frequent reaching, walking, stooping, lifting up to 20 pounds, and occasionally sitting.
- Predominantly indoor work; occasional outdoor outreach in hot (above 100 °F) or cold (below 32 °F) temperatures and uneven ground.
