Metallurgical Failure Analysis Engineer
Apex Systems is looking to hire an ONSITE Metallurgical Failure Analysis Engineer for our client based out of Hagerstown, MD. This assignment is anticipated to be a 6-month contract with strong potential for extension; however, Apex Systems cannot guarantee the length of this assignment. This will also have a first-shift Monday–Friday schedule.
Responsibilities:- Investigate failed metal components to determine root causes of performance issues, including fracture, corrosion, or material defects.
- Perform detailed failure analysis using techniques such as microscopy, fractography, and material characterization.
- Conduct destructive and non-destructive testing (e.g., tensile testing, hardness testing, and NDT methods) to evaluate material properties and replicate failure conditions.
- Analyze test data and material behavior to identify failure mechanisms such as fatigue, creep, or stress corrosion.
- Prepare detailed technical reports documenting findings, conclusions, and recommended corrective actions.
- Present analysis results and recommendations to engineering, quality, and leadership teams.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement design, material, or process improvements to prevent recurrence of failures.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to material performance, reliability, and product quality.
- Master's degree or PhD in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Strong understanding of metallurgical principles, including phase transformations, alloy behavior, fracture mechanics, and corrosion.
- Hands-on experience with analytical tools such as SEM, EDS, optical microscopy, and mechanical testing equipment.
- Experience interpreting microstructures, fracture surfaces, and material test data.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate complex technical findings clearly through written reports and presentations.
- Experience working in cross-functional engineering or quality environments.
