Position: PUBLIC AFFAIRS SPECIALIST (FULL-TIME CONTRACTUAL)

Main Purpose of the Job

The main purpose of this full‑time contractual position is to serve as a member of the Public Affairs staff for the Worcester County Health Department by assisting in preparing and submitting internal and external communications.

This may include development of:

  • News releases
  • Print media
  • Social media
  • Health communications campaigns

This position will also be responsible for emergency preparedness and risk communications.

The selected applicant must be willing and able to travel to all Worcester County Health Department sites and will be required to work occasional evening and/or weekend hours.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Four years of experience in public information, public relations, journalism, or related publicity or promotional work.

Notes:

  • Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with at least 30 semester credit hours in English, journalism, public relations, writing, or other similar and related areas of study for the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the public‑affairs specialist classification or public‑affairs specialty codes in the information and arts field of work on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience.
Benefits
  • Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.
  • Contractual employees are responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for medical and prescription coverage; the state subsidizes the remaining 75%.
  • Optional enrollment is available in dental, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, with full premium responsibility by the employee.
  • Leave may be granted at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
