Responsibilities
As a Data Center Technician, you will manage the heartbeat of AWS’s global infrastructure by performing hardware and network diagnostics, physical repairs, and participating in on‑call duties.
- Perform server rack installations and hardware break‑fix on various components.
- Troubleshoot network issues and respond to operational incidents that impact service availability.
- Conduct routine network, server hardware, and operating system repairs to maintain overall availability of AWS services.
- Act as the primary contact point for internal and external stakeholders, including engineers, developers, vendors, and contractors.
- Participate in scheduled maintenance and change‑management activities.
- Contribute to documentation and process improvement initiatives based on analysis of operational issues.
- Help interview, train, and onboard new team members.
- Lift and move materials up to 40 pounds.
- Work in cramped and/or elevated locations.
- Bend, lift, stretch, and reach.
- Stand and walk for up to 8+ hours a day.
- Ascend and descend ladders, stairs, and gangways safely.
- Shifts longer than 8 hours to support 24/7 operations, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- May be assigned to a facility still under development; training may require travel to established locations until the site becomes fully operational.
- Ability to travel to or commute between data center locations as needed.
- Willingness to temporarily work at alternative sites during training periods or until assigned facility is operational.
- Travel frequency will vary based on business needs and operational status of assigned facility.
- Take ownership of technical issues brought by the customer base and engage other teams when needed to drive resolution.
- Show a strong aptitude for troubleshooting and problem solving.
- Solve problems at their root and step back to understand the broader context.
- Maintain service level agreements through proactive issue detection and reporting.
- Act bias toward action in the absence of direction or support.
- Improve effectiveness through process innovation.
- Work a flexible schedule, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
- 18+ months of computer/server hardware troubleshooting or related IT experience.
- 18+ months of computer layer 1/2 networking experience (including troubleshooting and repair).
- Experience working in a data center environment (racking and stacking gear, cable management, hot/cold aisle containment).
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional or military experience in an IT‑related field (e.g., computer science, network engineering).
- Industry‑standard certifications (CompTIA, CCENT, Network+).
- Understanding of Linux or similar operating systems.
- Experience training and onboarding new team members.
