Position Summary:

This position provides coordination of all interpreting services and other related support services for Deaf and hard of hearing students, using varying styles and approaches that reflect an understanding and acceptance of the role of culture in a diverse, multicultural workplace. This position will also serve as an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter to facilitate communication with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals at the College.

This position requires being on call in order to respond to cancellations and adjustments that may be required for interpreting assignments. This position supports enrollment, retention, and completion initiatives of the College.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

These duties are intended only as examples of the various types of job duties to be performed. The omission of the specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is a similar, related, or logical assignment to the position.

The following are the functions essential to performing this job:

1. Hire, train, supervise, evaluate, and assign/schedule interpreters.

2. Manage coordination of interpreting services including staff interpreters, PTVS interpreters, and agency interpreters.

3. Provide on call, after-hours coordination duties, for which flex hours will be provided.

4. Conduct client needs assessment to match clients with appropriate interpreters.

5. Perform high level, complex, and technical interpreting for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals using American Sign Language or another sign language-based system such as Signed English, Transliteration, and/or Visual Gestural Communication.

6. Interpret set classes and/or provide substitute interpreting each semester. The number of classes that can be interpreted will vary each semester and be determined in consultation with the Disability Access Services (DAS) Director.

7. Provide assigned interpreting services as needed during College closures when classes continue.

8. Provide transcription services for Deaf and hard of hearing students in classrooms or remotely, using C-Print transcription, as needed and with applicable training provided.

9. Support faculty with Deaf or hard of hearing students with captioning for pre-recorded class materials, captioning for Structured Remote/Hybrid/Online course content, or voice-over interpretation for signed videos, as needed and with applicable training provided.

10. Serve as a resource to faculty and staff regarding learning needs of Deaf and hard of hearing students.

11. Develop and present workshops or training sessions for faculty, staff, students, and other College partners.

12. Manage tracking and monitoring of all College interpreting.

13. Develop and recommend protocols related to interpreting services being solicited, provided, canceled, terminated, or substituted.

14. Manage department budget in consultation with DAS Director.

15. Support various enrollment, retention, and completion initiatives of the College.

16. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor's Degree

2. Completion of a post-secondary Interpreter Preparation/Training Program

3. Five (5) years of interpreting experience

4. National certification recognized by the Registry of the Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)

5. Demonstration of interpreting skills proficient for interpreting at the post-secondary level (assessed at interview)

Desired Qualifications

1. Bachelor's Degree in ASL Interpreting, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, Special Education, or related field

2. Previous experience coordinating the provision of interpreting services

3. Previous supervisory experience

4. Experience successfully working with difficult or demanding customers in a high-stress setting

5. Experience in an educational environment

6. Working knowledge of and demonstrated adherence to the RID Code of Professional Conduct

Work Schedule

8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday
