Sign Language Educational Interpreter II

Location:
Central Office- 191 South East St.
The Educational Interpreter II provides sign language services for students, faculty, staff, families, and community stakeholders eligible to receive such services through Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS).
Essential FunctionsReporting directly to the Coordinator of Interpreting Services, the Educational Interpreter I performs the following duties:
- Facilitates communication through the following activities:
- Interprets/transliterates information, accurately conveying the thought, intent, and spirit of the sender in the communication mode determined by the IEP team
- Interprets/transliterates situations outside the classroom as appropriate and assigned
- Fosters appropriate use of an interpreter in a variety of settings
- Interprets/transliterates information for all other stakeholders:
- Interprets/transliterates information, accurately conveying the thought, intent, and spirit of the message in the communication mode preferred by the stakeholder
- Coordinates facility logistics
- Position self to provide best distance, lighting, background and angle for a clear line of sight
- Advocate the use of closed captioning and other technology
- Maintain and continue professional growth and development
- Prepare by acquiring familiarity with materials and vocabulary
- Collaborate with other interpreters to share information and signs
- Attend professional development sessions provided by FCPS
Complies with the Code of Ethics set forth by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
Other Essential Functions- Provides educators general information about social, emotional and cultural aspects of individuals who are deaf/hard of hearing
- Shares best practices for those utilizing interpreting services
- Attends IEP Team meetings or provides information when requested
- Regular and predictable attendance
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Interpreting Services
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Fluent in Sign Language
- Completion of an interpreter training program from a higher education institute or three (3) years of successful interpreter experience in lieu of training
- Certification from RID, VQAS, EIPA, NAD or equivalent
- Capable of performing the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations
- Background in an educational setting
- Classroom interpreting experience
- Familiarity with FCPS policies, goals and programs
