The Frederick National Laboratory is operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

Program Description

The Facilities Maintenance and Engineering (FME) Directorate is responsible for laboratory space, administrative space, infrastructure, campus landscape, planning, and design, and construction management at Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research.

Key Roles/Responsibilities
  • Walks through all support equipment spaces checking for malfunctioning machinery and taking corrective action as necessary.
  • Identify potential machinery and system malfunctions; start/stop equipment as required; effect minor repairs to a large variety of systems and equipment; maintain legible and concise records; follow established procedures; work independently.
  • Responds to scientific, animal area, and other equipment alarm conditions, taking corrective action as necessary.
  • Maintains a clear and concise logbook of all activities occurring during the shift.
  • Calls responsible Supervisor on any major issues.
  • Determines need for assistance and calls-in necessary craftsmen.
  • Maintains radio contact with Protective Services.
  • Working knowledge of systems utilized and program principles such as:
    Support systems including chillers, refrigeration, ventilation, alarm and control systems (computerized, electromechanical and pneumatic); electrical; steam, water and gas piping and controls.
Work Schedule
  • Friday: 11:00 p.m. – Saturday 10:00 a.m.
  • Saturday: 11:00 p.m. – Sunday 10:00 a.m.
  • Monday: 3:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. (midnight)
  • Tuesday: 3:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. (midnight)

Note:

Work hours are subject to change based on operational and coverage requirements. This position supports after‑hours operations between 3:30 p.m. and 6:45 a.m., and flexibility may be required to ensure adequate staffing during this period.

Basic Qualifications
  • Possession of a high school diploma. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to the education requirements, a minimum of two (2) years of craft‑related experience is required.
  • Ability to perform physical duties including frequently lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Duties require full range of motion, and include walking, prolonged standing, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, and working in confined areas, potential exposure to particulates, vapors or noisy environment.
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, occasionally in environments that are dusty, noisy, or which could have work hazards.
  • Must have no more than 3 demerit points in the previous twelve (12) months or five (5) demerit points in the preceding thirty‑six (36) months as determined by Leidos Biomed Use of Government Owned or Leased Vehicles Policy.
  • This position is considered safety‑sensitive and will be subject to random drug testing per the Leidos Biomedical Research Drug Free Workplace Program.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with the calibration, repair, fabrication, modification, maintenance, and installation of electronic, pneumatic, electrical, and/or mechanical instruments/equipment.
  • Experience servicing such items as electric motors, pumps, control valves, and filter systems.
  • Experience with Scientific and Building Alarm Systems.
  • Experience with OSHA standards and sound construction safety practices.
Job Hazards
  • This position is subject to working in or have the potential to exposure to high noise levels for extended periods of time requiring medical clearance.
