Duties, Responsibilities & Other

The Practice Leader is a highly organized and experienced individual who assumes a pivotal role in day-to-day leadership, financial management, marketing, coordination, collaboration, team building, mentoring and staff development within the technical practice.

  • Experienced in the technical design of Civil Land Development projects servicing public state and municipal clients, private residential, commercial, and industrial clients.
  • Experienced as a Project Manager of Land Development projects from feasibility analysis, through design, permitting, bidding and construction.
  • Experienced in leading a team of engineers and planners, including mentoring, directing work, workload allocation, and driving positive culture and employee morale.
  • Provide Leadership/Mentorship/Motivation to staff.
  • Take an active role in recruitment and development of new staff.
  • Serve as Project Manager for major clients.
  • Serve as a PM or as a technical resource to develop studies, reports, plans, specifications and estimates.
  • Provide independent QA/QC on projects.
  • Work closely with other KCI Disciplines to market/cross-sell/complete work.
  • Prepare technical and fee proposals.
  • Active in local business associations, develop business development materials, and market to architects and developers.
  • Participate in the development of annual business planning and ongoing financial stewardship of the Land Development practice.
  • Must be a highly self-motivated, dynamic individual.
  • Directly reports to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Practice Leader.
Leadership and Management

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership and guidance to Project Managers (PMs) and Senior Project Managers (Sr. PMs), and staff within the practice.
  • Support the professional growth and development of Sr. PMs, PMs, and staff. Provide technical project and staff oversight.
  • Assume responsibility for the business within the practice, focusing on achieving budgeted margins, project health, and effective cash management across projects.
  • Collaborate with other Practice Leaders to share best practices and optimize collective success.
  • Hire and manage the work routine of all assigned staff and assign job activities as required.
  • Track and coordinate practice performance results.
  • Provide project and client leads to other practice leaders to grow their practices.
  • Serve as project manager on select projects.
  • Ensure a high level of quality on all projects within the practice.
Recruitment, Retention, and Professional Development
  • Lead recruiting and retention efforts to attract and retain top talent within the practice.
  • Develop and deliver timely annual employee performance appraisals for assigned staff.
  • Mentor staff, leading in their training and development.
Financial Management
  • Lead negotiations of contract terms, scopes, and fees with clients/subconsultants.
  • Lead project schedule development from inception to completion for projects within the Practice.
  • Develop monthly progress reports and invoices for projects.
  • Prepare monthly staff utilization plans.
  • Operate within specified corporate or project budget parameters; provide input to unbilled work authorizations and forward to leadership.
  • Provide monthly cash management (WIP/AR) comments to Finance and the Project Management Office.
  • Provide weekly new project budget data to project analysts.
