Job OverviewThe Director of Health and Wellness has overall operational responsibility of the Health & Wellness Center and all programs run by the staff. The role includes developing, planning and implementing new procedures and methods within Association guidelines to achieve strategic goals. The Director collaborates with the Vice President of Healthy Living and Assistant Director/Coordinators in developing member‑centered programs and provides leadership for the annual fundraising campaign.
The position demands an overall understanding of all equipment used in the fitness center and by fitness staff, with a focus on maintaining competitiveness within industry standards. The Director creates a member‑focused culture, models relationship‑building skills, fosters a climate of conflict resolution, problem solving and innovation, ensuring member satisfaction.
- Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, health or physical education with coursework that exhibits background in anatomy, kinesiology, human physiology and wellness or senior program development. Additional focus on human services, social services, recreation, business or equivalent preferred.
- Two or more years of staff and program management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other not‑for‑profit agency.
- Four years of experience in a management role in the operation of a wellness/fitness center is also required. A master’s degree may be substituted for the experience.

- Strong interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills, capable of working effectively with board members, staff members, and volunteers.
- Knowledge of health & wellness and customer service, instruction practice, group and program creation and facilitation, community outreach, and budget and fiscal management.
- Works with Associate Directors and Coordinators to ensure successful recruitment, hiring, training and development of personnel and volunteers as needed.
- Directly supervises Associate Director and Program Coordinators within the Health and Wellness function.
- Assures personal growth of staff through consultations, trainings, conferences, department meetings and performance reviews. Establishes individual and team goals; develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
- Ensures customer satisfaction by confirming staff have the resources necessary to provide members and participants with the highest level of customer service.
- Think, communicate and behave as a cause‑driven leader and role model for other staff and members when it comes to desired staff behaviors; promotes youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in all job‑related functions.
- Sets standards of quality for programs in the Health and Wellness department. Ensures we are providing programs that meet industry standards and that staff is held accountable to the quality program standards established.
- Cultivates and maintains positive relationships with members through quality programs. Responds to all member and agency inquiries/complaints in a timely manner.
- Ensures that policies and procedures are followed.
- Assists with financial development activities of the branch including Annual Campaign and United Way.
- Is successful in obtaining grant funding for specific evidence‑based health and wellness programs.
- Prepares and successfully administers budgets related to Health & Wellness programs throughout the county.
- Works with VP of Facilities, VP of Healthy Living and all vendors to ensure proper equipment is being sourced and that we are up to date with industry standards.
