It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.

Reporting to the Associate Warden for Custody, this position is the Officer-in-charge (OIC) and is responsible for the custody and security of the facility and the safety of the general public.

• Planning, supervising, and coordinating activities in a close custody facility.
• Following security policies and procedures, assigning and supervising custody staff, and coordinating administrative affairs within the facility.
• Serving as shift supervisor, supervisor of Correctional Lieutenant III’s, and may serve as Officer-in-Charge.
• Conducting frequent inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is maintained, and that assignments are being carried out effectively.
• Implementing disciplinary measures with offenders and employees on minor infractions of rules.
• Investigating offender complaints and making reports of such actions to higher level officials.
• Working to prevent or resolve disorders such as assaults, riots, fires, and escapes.
• Preparing reports on offenders pertaining to their behavior, attitudes, and work records for use on the offender classification committee.
• Organizing and conducting training programs for employees, including on-the-job training.

Salary Range: $50,088 - $87,654

• MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
• To be considered for a Correctional Captain III position, ALL applicants must:
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
