Position: Machinist/Tool and Die Maker/ Aerospace Structural Welder

The Machinist/Tool and Die Maker/ Aerospace Structural Welder is responsible for support of highly sensitive HQ USAF operational plans and safe air transportation for Cabinet Members, senior military leaders, and visiting foreign dignitaries.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advise on metals machining, designing, and production problems.
  • Design, manufacture, or modify precision tools, gauges, cutting tools, metal dies, or molds used in shaping or forming metal or nonmetallic material and fixtures.
  • Perform metal shop calculations, determining cutting speeds, feeds, and settings.
  • Use manual and computer numerical controlled (CNC) machines to manufacture and repair cams, gears, slots, and keyways for aircraft components.
  • Write programs for CNC machines using CAD‑CAM methods.
  • Check completed components and determine serviceability according to drawings and specifications.
  • Disassemble, assemble, and fit component parts using specialized fasteners.
  • Use metal working equipment and tools to produce surface finishing specifications.
  • Extract broken or damaged screws, nuts, bolts, and aircraft hardware.
  • Check components for wear tolerances using precision measuring devices and tools.
  • Enter required data on aircraft forms and input data into the Maintenance Information System.
  • Perform structural fusion welding on aircraft and ground support equipment in line with IAW technical data, selecting correct filler materials and shielding gases.
  • Clean parts using liquid, vapor, and sand blasting equipment.
  • Read and understand engineering or mechanical drawings/blueprints.
  • Fabricate, manufacture, weld, braze, silver solder, cut, preheat/post heat, bend, and saw in the correct sequence to complete welding projects without direct supervision.
  • Design and repair special trailers and stands used in aircraft maintenance.
  • Perform heat‑treating, tempering, annealing, stress relief, and artificial aging of aerospace metals, tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures per technical data.
  • Set up and operate stationary and mobile MIG, TIG, plasma arc cutters, oxyacetylene cutting torches, and heat‑treating ovens.
  • Maintain certification requirements I/A/W AFI 21‑105, T.O. 00‑25‑252, and Military Specifications 1595 for materials including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, and Inconel.
  • May perform duties as a Qualified Weld Inspector and may conduct weld training and recertification in various welding processes.
  • Knowledge of hazards of explosive gases, hazardous rays, and fumes, and proper handling, use, and disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Perform other duties as assigned with provided training, including TDY and travel.
  • Work days, swings, nights, and/or weekend shifts as required.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of welding and machine shop practices/procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical data.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance; US citizenship required.
  • Must obtain and maintain a flight line driver's license.
  • Ability to work days, nights, weekends, and shifts as required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years’ working knowledge in welding and machining.
