CGI Federal is seeking a Build Mechanical Technician to provide advanced hands‑on expertise in the assembly, fabrication, modification, and repair of prototype hardware and complex mechanical systems for a Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2) program with the U.S. Army. This role plays a key part in building NGC2 capabilities by working across all phases of the hardware manufacturing process. The technician develops, implements, and improves shop procedures, build guidelines, and assembly standards while collaborating closely with engineers, machinists, and manufacturing specialists to deliver high‑quality prototype and production‑ready components.

Prototype Assembly & Construction
- Assemble, construct, and modify prototype systems, subsystems, and mechanical components
- Support hands‑on fabrication of prototype hardware from engineering drawings or models
- Perform complex mechanical builds requiring advanced precision, alignment, and fit‑up skills
- Operate numerical control (NC) machines, machining equipment, and fabrication tools
- Fabricate brackets, housings, structural components, and support hardware
- Apply knowledge of manufacturing best practices, machining principles, and fabrication techniques
- Perform repair, rework, or refurbishment of prototype and pre‑production components
- Conduct troubleshooting and corrective actions for mechanical build issues
- Ensure rework meets engineering, quality, and safety requirements
- Develop task‑specific build procedures, standards, and guidelines for mechanical work
- Update shop practices, tooling requirements, and assembly methods as needed
- Support creation of manufacturing documentation such as build travelers or work instructions
- Work from engineering drawings, models, sketches, or digital technical data
- Provide feedback to engineers to improve design manufacturability and assembly feasibility
- Support first‑article builds and participate in design‑for‑manufacturing reviews
- Support all phases of the hardware manufacturing process from prototype to low‑rate production
- Assist with material handling, equipment setup, and shop floor readiness
- Ensure build tasks meet program timelines, quality requirements, and configuration standards
Education
- AA/AS degree from an accredited college in engineering or related field, OR
- Graduation from a 2‑year technical school with certification in relevant mechanical discipline
- 5+ years of experience assembling, constructing, or fabricating prototype systems and subsystems
- Hands‑on experience using manual and/or numerical control machining equipment
- Experience working in a machine shop, prototype lab, or advanced manufacturing environment
- Experience interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, and mechanical documentation
- Proficiency in mechanical assembly, machining, and precision fabrication
- Ability to operate shop equipment such as drills, mills, lathes, saws, and NC machines
- Strong understanding of mechanical tolerances, fasteners, materials, and fabrication methods
- Ability to follow and create technical instructions, build documentation, and procedures
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
- Ability to work independently and within cross‑functional engineering/manufacturing teams
- Ability to support rapid prototype schedules and adapt to evolving engineering requirements
Advanced Fabrication Expertise
- Experience supporting defense systems, prototypes, or tactical equipment
- Familiarity with CNC programming, 3D printing, or advanced machining processes
