We are hiring for a Mid‑Level CNC Machinist for our WOLF facility in St. Inigoes, MD. The role will involve programming, setting up and operating 3‑ and 5‑axis CNC mills, CNC lathes, and occasional conventional machining equipment to produce unique products and systems for Naval Air Warfare Center projects. The machinist will work collaboratively with customers, train junior personnel, maintain a clean and safe shop environment, and perform routine preventive maintenance.
Responsibilities- Program, set up and operate 3‑ and 5‑axis CNC mills, CNC lathes, and, on occasion, conventional mills and lathes.
- Implement geometric dimensioning and tolerance practices to ensure all production products meet drawing specifications.
- Maintain proficiency in CAD/CAM software such as GibbsCAM and Master Cam through formal and informal training.
- Collaborate with customers to understand project requirements and schedule, developing machining options and translating requirements into functional hardware.
- Actively train and mentor Junior Machinists and other shop personnel.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work environment.
- Follow and enforce all machine‑shop safety standards.
- Plan and conduct work from blueprints, drawings, test plans, and aviation technical publications.
- Perform standard pre‑operational checks on assigned machines and notify facility PM technician of any issues.
- Fabricate unconventional, one‑of‑a‑kind items, systems, or apparatus in support of experimental project test articles.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on assigned machines and manage tool inventories, as well as procure equipment and consumables.
- Other tasking as required to support customer requirements.
- Work will be performed in an active machine shop that can be loud.
- Must be well‑versed in safety protocols.
- Position involves approximately 45% standing, 20% bending, 15% reaching, 5% sitting, 5% walking, and 10% lifting.
- Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs unassisted.
- High school education or equivalent.
- Formal trade school, college, or military training highly desired.
- 2–5 years of increasingly complex CNC experience.
- Mix of conventional and CNC machining experience, with knowledge of GibbsCAM (or similar CAD/CAM).
- Full command of milling, turning, grinding, and plating processes.
- In‑depth knowledge of materials such as carbon steel, aluminum, tool steel, stainless steel, composites, and fiberglass.
- Skilled in mathematics required for machinists and familiar with tape measure, micrometer, dial caliper, and other measuring devices.
- Forklift experience and/or 3D printing experience a plus.
- Current driver’s license and ability to be insured through company vehicle insurance.
- U.S. citizenship required and existing or ability to obtain a U.S. DoD Secret Security Clearance prior to start date and to maintain it during employment.
