About the Position

The Prince George’s County Department of Health is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Family Nurse Practitioner (Nurse Practitioner I/II), grade A23/A25 position, in the Family Health Services/Reproductive Health Clinical Care Division. This entry‑level specialized professional community health nursing role provides direct primary care, comprehensive nursing, therapeutic and preventive health care services in an expanded nurse practitioner role for individuals, families, and groups.

Work is performed in accordance with the Maryland Nurse Practice Act and the Practice of the Nurse Practitioner regulations. The Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse (R.N.) who has advanced education and clinical training in a health care specialty area, which may include Well Woman, Reproductive Health, PrEP, STI and HIV care, Adult Health, and Women’s/Ob Gyn Health (Midwife).

Selected individuals are responsible for assessing health status, performing physical examinations, providing treatment, prescribing medications, recommending follow‑up care, and making referrals. They also deliver health teaching, counseling, and guidance to patients and families, and work under the direction of a higher‑level nurse and a physician with whom a joint formal written agreement has been signed. The role involves interpreting clinical data, including laboratory reports, and decisions are reviewed through records, reports, conferences, and observation.

Responsibilities
  • Obtain a comprehensive health history from patients or families, record findings, and critically evaluate patient health status.
  • Perform detailed examinations and assessments, distinguishing normal from abnormal findings.
  • Review findings with physicians and determine which patients need additional care within or outside the department’s services.
  • Identify and manage acute and chronic illnesses according to established protocols.
  • Provide emergency care or crisis intervention in the absence of a physician.
  • Provide follow‑up care for clients diagnosed and treated by a physician and referred to the nurse practitioner.
  • Maintain current clinical and nursing records.
  • Serve as a consultant to other health care providers.
  • Formulate and implement a plan of care involving various treatments, prescribing medications, recommending follow‑up care, and making referrals as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution, or an equivalent program approved by the Maryland State Board of Nursing.
  • Master’s Degree in Public Health, Community Health Nursing, or another appropriate nursing specialty.
  • All candidates must also have:
    • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license and completion of a Nurse Practitioner program with certification in Maryland issued by the Maryland State Board of Nursing.
    • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Epic Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
