Clinical Instructor (adjunct position)

Under the direction of the Nursing Department Chair, the Clinical Instructor (adjunct position) provides supervision and direction ofpre-licensure nursing students in the clinical and/or laboratory inthe following courses/content areas of Nursing Fundamentals, Adult Health, Maternal Health, Pediatrics and Mental Health Nursing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Instruction (70%)
  • Directs, manages and evaluates student learning in an approvedclinical setting, adhering to the policies of the clinical setting and the College.
  • Assists the student in integration of theory and practice,specifically to the course’s learning activities and level of thelearner.
  • Evaluates students’ clinical reasoning skills and providesformal feedback at midterm and at the end of the course to assessprogress and overall performance.
  • Provide clinical, skills lab, and classroom instruction as appropriate.
  • Provides direct observation and guidance to students as they engage in learning activities with clients.
  • Evaluates students’ clinical performance and progression,ensuring alignment with the nursing program’s definedoutcomes.
  • Provides feedback to the lead faculty instructor (or to clinical faculty coordinator) regarding the clinical setting’seffectiveness in supporting student accomplishment of the courseand program outcomes.
Administrative (30%)
  • Maintains the professional practice knowledge base needed to instruct learners in contemporary nursing practice.
  • Participates as a member of the course team in the course’sdevelopment and evaluation activities with the lead faculty.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, both formally and informallywith didactic and clinical faculty members.
  • Provides timely and ongoing feedback to the lead faculty regarding individual student and group performance inaccomplishment of the course’s outcomes.
  • Provides feedback to the lead faculty (or to clinical facultycoordinator) regarding the clinical setting’s effectiveness in supporting student accomplishment of the course and programoutcomes.
  • Collaborates with the unit manager and staff so that the presence of students and their activities are supportive of theunit’s goals and needs.
  • Serves as a liaison between the clinical agency and the schoolof nursing.
  • Any other duties may be assigned or required.
Competencies

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have excellent skills in the following: knowledge of patientmedications, treatments, and diagnoses, and be able to relate theseaspects of patient care to problem solving/critical thinking skill development in the student. Possess leadership qualities, beorganized, able to deal appropriately with delicate situations, andable to effectively communicate and negotiate resolutions with faculty, students, and facility staff regarding problems in the clinical setting.

Education and/or Experience

Clinical instructors must hold an active Registered Nurse (R.N.)license in the State of Maryland, possess at least two years ofrecent clinical experience in the relevant specialty area, and havea minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is preferred. Instructors must also demonstrate expertise and practical knowledge in the specific content area they are assigned to teach.

Technology Skills
