Reports to: Director of Public Works & Supervisor of Public Works
Pay: Pay Grade 1 - $19.62 / hour. Pay Grade 2 - $21.75 / hour with a current Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License
Hours: 40 Hours per week; 7:00 am to 3:00 pm
Union: AFSCME - Blue
FLSA Status: Non-exempt hourly
ResponsibilitiesSummary of job duties:
This is an entry-level position in the Public Works Department. The primary initial assignment includes residential refuse collection, specifically manual loading of trash and recycling containers into the compactor of a commercial refuse truck.
Employees will receive paid training toward obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and are expected to rotate between refuse collection and driving duties once licensed. Additional duties include general public works maintenance, construction, and seasonal operations as assigned.
- Entry level position in the Public Works department - responsibilities include:
- Perform manual labor associated with residential refuse and recycling collection, including lifting, carrying, and loading containers into refuse trucks.
- Work as part of a refuse collection crew, maintaining safe work practices around traffic and equipment.
- Perform manual labor in construction, refuse collection, maintenance, and seasonal public works operations.
- Use hand tools and small equipment, including but not limited to: walking and deck mowers, snow blowers, air blowers, snow shovels, brooms, rakes, digging irons, shovels, picks, axes, pole clippers, loppers, pruners, and string/line weed trimmers.
- Serve as a helper on power equipment and vehicles.
- Assist in servicing and repairing equipment that presents safety hazards—such as gas-powered trimmers, augers, snow blowers, chain saws, tractors, riding mowers, concrete saws, plate tampers, compressors, air drills, and jackhammers—under the supervision of senior employees.
- Assist in constructing and repairing wooden structures.
- Dig drainage ditches, clean culverts, cut grass, fill washouts, and perform related grounds maintenance.
- Perform snow and ice control operations, including shoveling and equipment operation, as required.
- Perform related work as required.
Education: High School graduate or equivalent
Experience: None
- Knowledge and Abilities:
- Some knowledge of hand tools and equipment used in construction, maintenance, and refuse collection.
- Ability to perform heavy physical labor, including lifting, carrying, and repetitive motion.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and work effectively as part of a team.
- Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Vehicle Operator’s License.
