Responsibilities

The Sr. Operations Technician is responsible for the receipt, inventory, storage, withdrawal, and shipment of biological specimens, samples, clinical agents, and materials from multiple commercial and government clients. The position requires independent work, self‑direction, effective communication, and sound judgment. Core duties include:

  • Receives, handles, and inventories specimens of human, animal, and/or plant origin at temperatures ranging from ambient to
    -196°C, including potentially hazardous materials.
  • Prepares samples or clinical agents for pickups, courier deliveries, and shipments.
  • Maintains and updates an inventory management system for data entry, sample tracking, and management.
  • Creates and maintains files for data validation, prepares queries, reviews accumulated data for accuracy, and prepares reports of information and sample data.
  • Performs internal specimen consolidation and reorganization projects under guidance of a Lead Operations Technician.
  • Participates in process improvement activities.
  • Assures compliance with cGMP parts 210 and 211 and company quality systems.
  • Follows SOPs, facility safety guidelines, FDA and cGMP regulations.
  • Mentors and trains peers according to SOPs and effective use of equipment, storage, retrieval, serum separation, aliquoting, and general laboratory procedures.
  • Contributes to the development of standard operating procedures for the repository or laboratory.
  • Investigates specimen movement history, recommends resolution of inventory inaccuracies, and resolves complex discrepancies and multi‑field corrections.
  • Verifies material prior to shipment and confirms accuracy of data entry records for incoming material.
  • Processes biological samples according to client specifications, including blood‑component separation and aliquoting.
  • Supports printing services: prints materials, compiles job packets, maintains supply inventory, and performs minor preventive maintenance on thermal transfer label printers.
  • Troubleshoots facility equipment issues and provides suggestions or solutions for implementation.
  • Conducts mid‑process pick‑up of projects, determines path forward, and sees projects to accurate conclusion.
  • Leads printing proof implementation and maintenance processes, collaborating with Quality Assurance, Client Services, and Technical Services.
  • Leads labeling services and batch record preparation.
  • Coordinates multiple repository projects on a day‑to‑day basis.
  • Provides follow‑up to direct client contact via email or in person.
  • Performs other duties assigned to meet business needs.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma required;
    Bachelor’s degree in a science‑related field preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of repository work experience with data entry, shipping/receiving, and sample management.
  • Minimum 2 years of packaging, labeling, and batch record experience.
  • Proven ability to communicate verbally and in written form.
  • Expertise in preparing reports using Microsoft Excel; knowledge of Microsoft Word and, preferably, Access.
  • Expert ability to handle, process, and store specimens using a computerized storage and retrieval system.
  • Knowledge of Universal Precautions, laboratory, and quality assurance/control procedures.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record if required to transport material.
  • Strong professional judgment, logic, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Self‑driven and able to work independently without continual oversight.
  • High integrity and reliability; database and inventory management are key aspects of the position.
  • Experience with Optel, Codesoft, label printing, and barcode grading preferred.
  • Certifications:

    IATA Dangerous Goods Training for Class 6.2 Shipping;
    Bloodborne Pathogens Training;
    Hepatitis B vaccine required.
  • Work schedule:

    Mon‑Fri, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
