Summary

The Senior Blast Analyst provides senior-level scientific and analytical support to the Blast Injury Research Coordination Office (BIRCO) within the Defense Health Agency (DHA) and U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC). The position supports the Government in analyzing and tracking Department of Defense (DoD) blast injury research activities, identifying knowledge gaps, and supporting coordination of research efforts across the DoD medical research enterprise.

The Senior Blast Analyst contributes to the development of strategic research information products and analytical assessments used by senior DoD leadership to monitor research progress, evaluate emerging scientific developments, and inform strategic planning related to blast injury prevention, mitigation, and treatment.

Responsibilities Essential Job Functions
  • Provide scientific and analytical support to the Government in monitoring and assessing blast injury research activities across the DoD research enterprise, including intramural and extramural research programs.
  • Analyze and synthesize research program data, contracts, grants, and progress reports to support portfolio awareness and preparation of executive-level information products.
  • Conduct literature reviews, scientific assessments, and capability gap analyses to identify emerging research trends, scientific advances, and areas requiring further investigation.
  • Assist the Government in maintaining situational awareness of ongoing blast injury research activities, including tracking research performers, study objectives, performance timelines, and alignment with DoD research priorities.
  • Support development of strategic planning products such as research roadmaps, strategy documents, quad charts, white papers, and briefing materials used to communicate research progress and priorities.
  • Prepare executive briefings, technical summaries, and analytical reports that translate complex scientific findings into accessible information for senior leaders and stakeholders.
  • Maintain research tracking databases, web-based data collection tools, and knowledge management systems used to monitor blast injury research activities.
  • Support tasking coordination by collecting and synthesizing research information, preparing draft responses, and assisting the Government with timely delivery of information products.
  • Assist with planning and execution of BIRCO meetings, workshops, working groups, Integrated Product Teams (IPTs), and scientific symposia by developing briefing materials, tracking action items, and documenting outcomes.
  • Coordinate with DoD organizations, federal agencies, academic institutions, and industry partners to collect relevant research information and support collaborative research initiatives.
Qualifications Necessary Skills and Knowledge
  • Advanced understanding of blast injury research, trauma science, neurotrauma, or related biomedical research areas.
  • Strong analytical and scientific writing skills with the ability to translate complex research findings into clear strategic information products.
  • Experience developing executive-level briefings, reports, and research summaries.
  • Knowledge of biomedical research program management and coordination within federal or defense research environments.
  • Ability to synthesize data from multiple sources and support enterprise-level research coordination efforts.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree in biomedical sciences, neuroscience, physiology, engineering, public health, or a related scientific discipline relevant to blast injury research.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience supporting biomedical research analysis, research program coordination, or scientific program management within DoD, federal agencies, academia, or industry.
  • Demonstrated experience producing scientific analyses, executive briefings, or strategic research assessments.
  • Clearance:
    Favorable adjudicated Tier 1 (NACLC); able to obtain a CAC.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting DoD medical research programs or blast injury research initiatives

  • Familiarity with DoD research governance processes, research portfolio tracking, and strategic planning activities
    .
  • Experience conducting technology landscape analyses, capability gap assessments, or research portfolio evaluations
    .
  • Experience preparing senior leader information products supporting defense health or biomedical research programs.
