Position Title: Biosafety Level Four Laboratory Scientist, Full-Time
Contract Duration: 12-month base period with renewable option periods
Location: Frederick, Maryland

VMG is seeking a Biosafety Level Four (BSL-4) Laboratory Scientist to support the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Integrated Research Facility in Frederick, Maryland. This position supports translational research focused on emerging viral pathogens by conducting virology and immunology studies in a Biosafety Level Four laboratory. The successful candidate will perform advanced laboratory research, analyze experimental data, maintain specimen accountability, and contribute to the development of innovative approaches for understanding and treating high-consequence infectious diseases.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct translational research involving emerging viral pathogens, including Ebola virus, Nipah virus, and other high-consequence infectious agents.
  • Perform laboratory-based virology and immunology assays in a Biosafety Level Four (BSL-4) environment.
  • Analyze experimental data and prepare technical reports, scientific summaries, and research findings.
  • Coordinate laboratory activities with biological technicians, technologists, and multidisciplinary research teams.
  • Develop and maintain proficiency in BSL-4 laboratory procedures, biosafety practices, and operational protocols.
  • Implement existing laboratory assays and assimilate new virology and immunology techniques.
  • Maintain accurate specimen inventories and ensure proper sample storage, accountability, and chain of custody.
  • Support research activities involving animal models and emerging infectious disease investigations.
  • Present weekly research updates during laboratory meetings and collaborate with investigators on ongoing scientific projects.
  • Maintain compliance with laboratory safety requirements, quality standards, and NIH research protocols.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Microbiology or a related life science discipline.
  • Prior experience working in a Biosafety Level Four (BSL-4) laboratory conducting virology and immunology research.
  • Experience performing basic and molecular virology techniques.
  • Experience conducting immunology assays.
  • Familiarity with specimen storage, inventory management, and sample accountability.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
  • Ability to participate in the NIH Bio Surety Program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting NIH, NIAID, or other federally funded infectious disease research programs.
  • Experience conducting translational research involving high-consequence viral pathogens.
  • Experience working with animal models in infectious disease research.
  • Knowledge of laboratory biosafety regulations and select agent research requirements.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary scientific teams in high-containment laboratory environments.
Work Environment
  • Full-time position (40 hours per week).
  • Position is located at the NIAID Integrated Research Facility, Frederick, Maryland.
  • Position requires onsite work, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed to support research operations.
  • Telework is not available.
  • High-containment Biosafety Level Four laboratory environment requiring strict adherence to biosafety, biosecurity, and personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols.
  • Position requires successful completion of all required medical surveillance, biosafety training, and security requirements associated with BSL-4 laboratory operations.
