Process Development Scientist; Upstream

Piper Companies is seeking an Upstream Scientist, Process Development to support the development, optimization, and scale-up of cell culture processes for biologics manufacturing with a pharmaceutical company near Frederick, MD
.

• Design, execute, and analyze experiments to develop robust upstream processes for recombinant protein and biologics production.
• Optimize cell culture conditions including media, feed strategies, and bioreactor parameters to maximize yield and product quality.
• Support scale-up and tech transfer of upstream processes from bench to pilot and GMP manufacturing.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Downstream Development, Analytical Development, MS&T, and Quality.
• Author and review technical documentation including development reports, protocols, and risk assessments.
• Troubleshoot upstream process issues and provide technical support to manufacturing operations.
• Ensure compliance with cGMP, FDA, EMA, and other global regulatory standards.

• 3+ years of experience in upstream process development or related biopharmaceutical roles.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Cell Biology, or related field.
• Hands‑on experience with mammalian cell culture in large‑scale bioreactors (AM , 3L).
• Strong understanding of cell metabolism, bioprocess engineering, and regulatory requirements.
• Proficiency with data analysis tools (e.g., JMP, Minitab, Excel).

• Salary range: approximately $40.00 – $55.00 hourly, commensurate with experience.
