under the fair labor and standards act this position is non-exempt from overtime. Actual salary placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the frederick county public school system. Please see linked salary scale for the full range.

role

a maintenance mechanic (plumber) performs a variety of duties including installing, maintaining, operating, trouble‑shooting and repairing commercial plumbing systems. Assists in all other building trade areas, as required.

essential functions

reporting directly to the maintenance area supervisor or designee performs the following duties:

construction, repair, and renovation of educational facilities
  • install, troubleshoot, and maintain commercial plumbing systems, including liquid, gas, and heating oil distribution and collections systems, commercial hvac/r and food service related equipment, and water treatment and filtration systems.
  • install, troubleshoot, and maintain commercial plumbing fixtures and hardware.
  • perform general repair of building structures and systems using basic carpentry skills.
occupational safety
  • maintains work areas in a clean, safe and sanitary manner and that all work is performed in accordance with osha, trade‑specific, and fcps standards, policies and procedures.
  • operates powered work platforms and manlifts, according to applicable regulations.
  • operates, inspects, and maintains vehicles, tools and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in safe operating condition.
other functions
  • work requires varied shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime. Respond in a timely manner to facility emergencies, including those occurring after normal business hours.
  • reassignment between work groups and worksites may occur. Work will require frequent travel between multiple facilities.
  • establish and maintain effective professional relations with coworkers, school staff, and local regulatory and safety officials. Communicate in a manner that enhances productivity and respectful relationships. Provide exceptional customer service.
  • monitor a company‑provided communication device to maintain contact within the department.
  • identify problems and develop solutions independently. Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and quality of service.
  • maintain license and certification requirements as defined by fcps. Seek constructive approaches to resolving workplace issues. Respond positively to change, showing willingness to learn new ways to accomplish work.
  • all leave must be requested in a timely fashion in compliance with policy and procedures. The amount of leave taken must not adversely affect the overall productivity of the group or infringe on coworkers.
  • present a professional appearance and maintain a safe work environment by consistently wearing uniforms and ppe.

required qualifications
  • plumber's journeyman license.
  • three (3) years paid, professional experience in the construction field in any one, or combination, of the following trades; electrical, plumbing, carpentry, air‑conditioning, heating, roofing, or equipment maintenance.
  • backflow prevention certification or the ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
  • a valid driver's license and ability to operate an fcps vehicle in accordance with regulation (fewer than 3 points in 12 months and 6 points in 24 months).
  • high school diploma or ged equivalent.
  • professional experience using tools of the plumbing trade, including powered hand tools, soldering, and brazing.
  • demonstrated familiarity with methods, techniques, tools, and instruments used residential or commercial construction trades.
  • working knowledge of computers to allow proper use of the computerized maintenance management system, or able to obtain necessary knowledge and skills within three (3) months of employment.
  • ability to read, interpret and diagnose problems from work order requests, laptop computer, blueprints, diagrams, verbal and written instructions.
