Field Service Specialist, Industrial Air Compressors

A Day in the Life You’ll start your morning reviewing scheduled service calls, parts availability, and technical bulletins. In the field, you’ll install, commission, troubleshoot, and repair rotary screw, reciprocating, and Centac/ECC air compressors—plus dryers, filtration, and other compressed air system components. Using precision measuring tools and diagnostic methods, you’ll pinpoint issues, implement corrective actions, and document results. Between calls, you’ll consult operations and parts manuals, advise customers and sales partners, and prepare clear service reports suitable for billing.

You’ll wrap the day by submitting timecards and expenses, ensuring accurate records and sound business practices.

What You’ll DoInstall, maintain, and repair Ingersoll Rand equipment at customer sites with minimal supervision.

Diagnose faults using precision tools; recommend and execute corrective actions.

Train customers, prospects, field sales, and service trainees on proper operation and care.

Keep current on installation and repair procedures; utilize operations and parts manuals.

Prepare legible, detailed technical reports and clear oral/written updates to the factory.

Uphold high integrity in handling company business, credit cards, and (if assigned) a company vehicle.

Submit accurate weekly expenses and timecards; practice cost‑efficient business travel.

Qualifications

Required2+ years of experience troubleshooting industrial/commercial mechanical systems.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Valid driver’s license held for at least 12 months with no major or frequent violations, including but not limited to: DUI within the past 5 years, Hit & Run, License Suspension, Reckless/Careless Driving, or multiple minor infractions/preventable collisions within the past 3 years.

Ability to work in mechanical equipment rooms, around noisy machinery, in extreme weather, at precarious heights/locations, and around high voltage per NFPA or equivalent standards.

Comfort with physical work: frequent use of hands/fingers; walking, stooping, kneeling; and lifting/moving within safety policy limits.

Core Competencies Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic computer tasks; adept with handheld devices (smartphone, tablet) and networked systems.

Strong customer service mindset: communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution.

Mechanical aptitude to learn, diagnose, and service compressor systems and related machinery.

Preferred

EPA 608 and/or F‑GAS 303/2008/CE/ISHRAE certification (refrigeration background a plus).

Experience with compressed air systems, centrifugal technologies, and controls.

Exposure to rotary and centrifugal compressor service/startup; dryers, cooling towers, and filtration.

Education in Electrical/Electronic Technology or HVAC; knowledge of AC/DC circuits, schematics, motors/controls, PLCs, HVAC electricity/controls, refrigeration systems; refrigerant certification.

Military or equivalent mechanical experience welcomed; candidates with the skills but without a formal program may be considered.

Travel & Work Patterns Occasional training travel: 1–2 times per year for approximately one week each (about 5–10%).Participate in an on‑call rotation with the local service team for after‑hours or weekend emergencies.

Tools, Tech, and Proficiencies Voltage systems: 120/208/240/480.Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).Mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic troubleshooting; electrical repair; maintenance and repair best practices.

EPA compliance knowledge.
