The Service Technician (In-Shop) is responsible for the effective diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and reconditioning of customer and company-owned heavy and construction equipment within the branch shop facility. Working under the direct supervision of the Branch Service Manager, this technician performs a wide range of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs to a high standard of quality, safety, and efficiency. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring strict adherence to all safety protocols and company procedures at all times.
EssentialDuties
- Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic faults on heavy and construction equipment using diagnostic tools, computer-based diagnostic software, technical manuals, and physical inspection.
- Plans the method, sequence, and parts requirements for assigned repairs prior to beginning work; communicates any scope changes or additional findings to the Branch Service Manager or Assistant Service Manager promptly.
- Performs repairs, overhauls, and reconditioning of equipment components and systems as assigned, including but not limited to: engines (diesel and gas), transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical and electronic systems, steering, braking, exhaust, cooling, and undercarriage components.
- Performs scheduled preventative maintenance services including fluid changes, filter replacements, inspections, adjustments, and lubrication services.
- Conducts pre- and post-repair inspections to verify that work has been completed correctly and that equipment meets safety and operational standards before return to customer.
- Operates equipment in the yard and shop bays as needed to move, test, and verify repairs; performs test cycles to confirm proper system function following completion of work.
- Ensures the cosmetic appearance of equipment upon repair completion meets company standards; cleans and prepares equipment as required.
- Maintains accurate and complete work order documentation, including labor time, parts used, outside purchases, and detailed descriptions of diagnostics and repairs performed.
- Records all cost-related items in the work order in a timely and legible manner, following established documentation methods and work order procedures.
- Orders parts and materials required for assigned repairs; ensures all unused parts and materials are returned per established guidelines.
- Accountable for billable time on assigned work orders; accurately tracks and reports time spent on each job throughout the workday.
- Operates and properly maintains all shop tools and equipment required to perform job responsibilities, including pneumatic and power tools, hydraulic jacks, hoists, lathes, grinding machines, welding equipment, and diagnostic computers.
- Obtains specialty tools using established procedures; ensures all tools and specialty equipment are cleaned and returned to their original location in proper working condition after use.
- Maintains personal toolset required for the job; keeps work area clean, organized, and in safe operating condition at all times.
- Reports any shop equipment malfunctions, tool shortages, or facility safety concerns to the Branch Service Manager promptly.
- Follows all safety rules, regulations, and company policies in performing every work assignment; this is a safety-sensitive role and full compliance is required at all times.
- Adheres to all OSHA standards and applicable EPA regulations, including proper handling, labeling, and disposal of hazardous materials, fluids, and waste.
- Wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for all tasks; actively contributes to a safe and hazard-free shop environment.
- Communicates professionally and respectfully with customers, co-workers, and management at all times; reflects positively on Core Equipment Group in all interactions.
- Collaborates with other technicians and shop personnel to ensure efficient workflow, shared knowledge, and high-quality outcomes on complex repairs.
- May provide guidance or assistance to less experienced technicians or technician trainees as directed by the Branch Service Manager.
- May participate in training programs required for the continued development of technical skills and product knowledge.
- Maintains current knowledge of equipment products, systems, and technologies relevant to the service department.
- Maintains a clean work area and performs all work in a neat and orderly fashion.
