Position: General Maintenance Mechanic (Structural Engineering Technician)

The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) is looking for a General Maintenance Mechanic III to provide technical support to our government customer located in Ft. Detrick, Maryland
.

The General Maintenance Mechanic III will maintain a comprehensive knowledge of mechanical equipment, engineering principles, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, and heating systems. Responsibilities include facilities maintenance and repairs, door, lock, and hardware installation, painting, expansion joints, wall, ceiling and flooring repairs, carpet and furniture installation, and minor electrical and sheet metal repairs.

Description of Responsibilities
  • Perform minor repairs to concrete block walls, gypsum board and fire-retardant panels, ensuring proper application of coating materials by brushing, rolling, and spraying according to specified directions and techniques.
  • Apply epoxy floor coatings for minor repairs, pour wet concrete into forms, spread and level, and finish using trowel and float.
  • Plan and lay out work utilizing blueprints or sketched plans, determine required tools, and estimate necessary materials.
  • Work in bio-containment suites (BSL‑3 and BSL‑4) with highly hazardous infectious agents and toxins, participating in Bio-surety Personnel Reliability System, and maintaining BPRP enrollment and Hepatitis B negativity with bi‑annual TB testing.
  • Operate and maintain woodworking and sheet metal machinery, using hand and power tools, and perform advanced surface preparation and coating techniques.
  • Maintain technical competency in repairing, replacing, and adjusting doors and door jambs, electrical components, light bulbs, cabinets, and fabricating wall plates, grates, strainers, sheet metal boxes, and interior/exterior signage.
  • Ensure all assignments are completed on time, reviewing work status, and addressing delays or issues.
  • Perform decontamination and maintenance tasks for BSL‑3 and BSL‑4 airlocks, HEPA filter housings, and penthouse spaces, and conduct HEPA filter housing certifications.
  • Work independently, planning and carrying out assignments directly with the requester or through the TPOC/Facility Management Office/COR, selecting materials and equipment as needed.
  • Respond to after‑hour, emergency call‑backs, and variable work schedules; response time shall be within one hour of notification.
  • Conduct on‑site inspections, interpret blueprints, verify specifications, and document any discrepancies for the TPOC, Facility Management Office, or COR.
  • Assist others on assignments as needed, ensuring safety standards are complied with and reporting status to the TPOC.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Required Degree / Education / Certification

High School Diploma or equivalency.

Required Skills and Experience
  • Five or more years of experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical equipment, engineering principles, HVAC, plumbing, and heating systems.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining woodworking and sheet metal machinery.
  • Expertise in standard surface preparation and coating methods and techniques, including use of scrapers, wire brushes, putty knives, sandpaper, paint brushes, rollers, and spray guns.
  • Skill in using hand tools such as hammers, cross‑cut saws, chisels, braces, bits, and planes, and operating power equipment such as saws, planers, and jointers.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of cement work methods, sequences, and techniques.
Required Citizenship and Clearance
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain BPRP status and BSL‑3/4 access in accordance with AR 190‑17 and local policies.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD SECRET clearance.
