Position: Lead Low - Voltage / Telecom Technician

Position Summary

Advantage Technology is seeking an experienced Lead Low-Voltage / Telecom Technician to join our growing team in Frederick, Maryland.

This position will support commercial structured cabling, telecom, Verkada camera systems, access control, wireless access points, network infrastructure, and other low-voltage technology projects.

This is a hands‑on field leadership role. We are looking for someone who can do more than pull cable. The right candidate can run jobs, lead helpers, communicate professionally with customers, complete clean installations, and make sure projects are finished correctly, documented properly, and ready for closeout.

The ideal candidate has strong commercial cabling experience, understands jobsite standards, takes pride in clean work, and can help deliver projects on time.

Key Responsibilities Structured Cabling & Low-Voltage Installation
  • Install, route, terminate, test, and label Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, fiber, coax, and other low-voltage cabling.
  • Install cable pathways, J-hooks, ladder rack, conduit, raceway, sleeves, cable tray, and support systems.
  • Build out telecom rooms, racks, patch panels, network closets, and cable management.
  • Install wireless access points, network drops, wall plates, faceplates, and related infrastructure.
  • Follow proper standards for cable routing, bend radius, labeling, testing, and documentation.
  • Troubleshoot cabling issues, failed tests, connectivity problems, and physical-layer issues.
  • Install Verkada cameras, access control hardware, door controllers, card readers, door contacts, request-to-exit devices, intercoms, and related equipment.
  • Mount cameras and devices cleanly and securely in commercial environments.
  • Assist with camera aiming, basic configuration, testing, and final walkthroughs.
  • Install cabling and hardware for doors, cameras, alarms, intercoms, and other security‑related systems.
  • Understand basic network requirements for IP cameras, cloud‑managed security systems, PoE devices, wireless access points, and access control equipment.
  • Lead small field crews and help direct helpers or junior technicians.
  • Review project scope, drawings, cable schedules, and project notes before and during jobs.
  • Communicate with project managers, sales engineers, customers, vendors, and internal teams.
  • Identify missing materials, change‑order needs, jobsite obstacles, and project risks.
  • Keep helpers productive and make sure work is completed safely and professionally.
  • Maintain a clean jobsite and represent Advantage Technology well at customer locations.
Documentation & Project Closeout
  • Label cables, patch panels, ports, racks, cameras, doors, and access control devices.
  • Complete test results, photos, redlines, as‑builts, and closeout notes.
  • Track time, materials, job progress, punch‑list items, and customer requests.
  • Report incomplete work, issues, or follow‑up needs to the project manager.
  • Help ensure projects are properly documented and ready for billing.
Required Qualifications
  • 10+ years of commercial structured cabling, telecom, low‑voltage, security, or network infrastructure experience.
  • BICSI certification required.
  • Experience installing, terminating, testing, and labeling Cat6/Cat6A cabling.
  • Experience mounting cameras, access points, racks, patch panels, and low‑voltage hardware.
  • Experience leading helpers, junior technicians, or small field crews.
  • Ability to read basic floor plans, scopes of work, cable schedules, and project notes.
  • Comfortable working on ladders, lifts, ceilings, walls, rooftops, and commercial jobsites.
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs. and perform physical field work.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Professional communication skills and a strong customer‑service mindset.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Verkada certification or willingness to complete Verkada training.
  • Fiber termination and testing experience.
  • Experience with Fluke or similar cable testing/certification tools.
  • OSHA 10, lift certification, or other jobsite safety training.
  • Basic networking knowledge, including switches, PoE, VLANs, IP addressing, and wireless access points.
