Job Information
Non‑exempt (compensatory and/or overtime eligible; additional compensation includes an annual work boot allowance); full‑time; 40 hours per week;
Monday – Friday; 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.; full‑benefits.
Placement as Inspector, Electrical Inspector or Plumbing Inspector can occur depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Note:
The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions, which are calculated per County policy. For external hires, offers are made at the base wage rate, with limited exceptions.
- Inspect building, plumbing and electrical installations during construction and upon completion to ensure proper materials and procedures are used.
- Maintain inspection records, prepare forms and reports, and ensure records are up‑to‑date.
- Check plans and specifications for installations and perform plan reviews on commercial projects as needed.
- Utilize the permits tracking system and other automated data sources to research, review and verify information.
- Respond to electronic, telephone and in‑person inquiries regarding residential building, plumbing and electrical code requirements.
- Consult with a Chief Inspector on difficult enforcement problems.
- Participate in non‑residential inspection of building, plumbing, electrical and other possible trades as required.
- Drive a County vehicle to various sites throughout the County.
- Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications and Requirements- High school graduation or equivalency.
- Minimum 9 years of building work experience that includes either plumbing or electrical installation work experience.
- Possession of ICC Residential Building Inspector – B1 certification (or ability to obtain and maintain within six months).
- Possession of ICC Combination Residential Inspector – P1, E1 and M1 certification (or ability to obtain and maintain within 18 months).
- Valid driver’s license.
- Possession of a State of Maryland Master Plumber’s or Electrician License (or a comparable license with ability to obtain reciprocity within 30 days after hire) will reduce required experience to 7 years.
- Master Electrician meeting all stated qualifications will be hired at a higher salary grade with a starting hourly rate of $29.43 per hour.
- Master Plumber meeting all stated qualifications will be hired at a higher salary grade with a starting hourly rate of $29.43 per hour.
- Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges.
- Considerable knowledge of methods and practices involved in installing, repairing and maintaining building, plumbing and electrical installations.
- Working knowledge of the International Building Code, Plumbing Code and National Electrical Code.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications.
- Ability to effectively understand and interpret plans and specifications.
- Ability to determine code violations, evaluate corrective actions and approve work.
- Ability to use computerized systems and equipment effectively.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, co‑workers and the public.
- Effective spoken and written English communication skills and ability to complete required paperwork.
- Work experience as a building, plumbing or electrical inspector.
- Frequently sitting, walking, climbing, stooping/kneeling/crouching, driving; occasionally reaching and performing repetitive motions; rarely lifting up to 20 pounds, lifting between 20‑50 pounds.
- Frequently working indoors; occasionally working outdoors, in hot temperatures above 100 °F and cold temperatures below 32 °F; rarely walking on uneven ground, working in dirty/dusty environments, working in noisy environments, working near machinery; working in confined spaces.
