Position: Plumber (Skilled Trade Specialist II)

Plumber (Skilled Trade Specialist II)

The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Aviation Administration (MDOT MAA) is seeking a plumber for the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall Airport).

Responsibilities
  • Installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing and natural gas equipment, piping, valves, and fittings in compliance with the Maryland State and International Plumbing Codes.
  • Installing valves and piping from 'A' to 12". Installation and repairs to showers, lavatories, water closets, faucets, and urinals.
  • Fitting copper pipes and fittings using assorted flux, solder, and brazing materials.
  • Using different types of gases (e.g., MAP and acetylene) to fit and cut copper and steel pipes; installing steel, water, and natural gas piping by using power threaders and grovers to cut, thread, and grove the ends of the piping.
  • Troubleshooting and repairing sewage ejector pumps, motors, and controls.
Qualifications
  • Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. (Additional work experience may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.)
  • Experience: Three years of experience performing skilled trade work in plumbing.

    Qualification:

    Two years of that experience must have involved service and repair of plumbing hardware in commercial and residential settings, including faucets, water heaters, utility sinks, ejector pumps, grease interceptors, troubleshooting leaks, and use of drain‑clearing machinery.
  • Certificate from a vocational‑technical school with a major in one or more of the skilled trades may be substituted for one year of the required general experience.
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non‑commissioned officer in utility repair or construction and engineering specialties may be substituted for one year of the required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland (including a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License during the probationary period if required).
  • Airfield Operators Permit in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations .
  • Ability to maintain a reliable communication link for emergency call‑back requirements.
  • Willingness to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, including rotating shift work and emergency call‑back procedures.
  • Physical fitness to perform maintenance work outdoors under all weather conditions or indoors in confined spaces; ability to move objects weighing over 50 pounds and work at heights or on high poles.
  • Experience working with or exposure to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead‑based paint, or chromium, and willingness to undergo required medical testing and hazardous‑materials training.
Essential Employee Information

Employees in this class are considered essential employees and are subject to emergency call‑back procedures, twenty‑four hours a day, as required to maintain continuous operation of a facility. They must be available to work during weather, operational, or disaster emergencies and may be required to work on high structures or in cramped quarters.
