Carpenter – Naval Air Station Patuxent River

Competition wages and an allowance for insurance and 401(k) are offered.

Salary
  • $40.66/hr

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and lay out work from blueprints, drawings, models, or verbal instructions.
  • Design, construct, remodel, retrofit, and repair interior and exterior structures made of wood, drywall, plaster, concrete or brick.
  • Design, construct, retrofit, and repair cabinets, tables, shelves, benches, partitions, flooring, door and window frames.
  • Install, repair, and maintain building roofs.
  • Repair and replace metal doors, door closers, door sweeps, weather stripping, peep holes, etc.
  • Handle vinyl siding, metal siding, gutters and downspouts, shingles, flat roof repair, VCT tile, ceramic tile and grout.
  • Concrete replacement and repair.
  • Perform drywall repairs, including mudding, sanding and painting of walls.
  • Use and maintain a variety of carpenter's hand tools, portable power tools and standard measuring instruments.
  • Select materials necessary for the work.
  • Respond to routine and emergency calls for repairs and service.
  • Clean, maintain, adjust, calibrate and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties.
  • Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations.
  • Estimate cost, time and materials for carpentry projects.
  • Research, purchase and inventory equipment parts, chemicals and supplies.
  • Participate in the maintenance and operation of the structural shop.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Essential Skills
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in both rough and finished carpentry in commercial/industrial settings, including applicable building and safety code requirements and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery and equipment.
  • Knowledge of building architectural/structural elements including alterations and repairs.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Adaptable and flexible in work situations.
  • Prioritizes tasks to ensure completion in a timely manner.
  • Practices workplace safety in the use of tools, equipment and supplies, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Qualifications and Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5+ years’ experience in the carpentry trade.
  • Valid driver's license compliant with REAL  or willingness and ability to obtain one.
  • Pass a pre‑employment drug screening and background check.
  • Regular, dependable attendance.
  • U.S. citizenship to obtain and maintain access to military installations.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted.
  • Use of hands, reaching with hands and arms, talking and walking.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, bending, squatting, standing, twisting or stooping.
  • Climbing ladders and entering confined spaces.
  • Lifting and adjusting heavy objects, contact with sharp, hot and/or very cold supplies and equipment.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in various temperatures (some extreme) and weather conditions.
