Job Summary
Performs electrical apparatus work onsite at customers facilities, including testing, preventative maintenance, commissioning, upgrades, and repairs to electrical apparatus.
Duties And Responsibilities- Assist in the execution of mechanical and electrical tasks on equipment utilized in power transmission, distribution, and generation at customer facilities.
- Read and interpret manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams to troubleshoot and solve equipment problems.
- Troubleshoot, repair, replace, and clean all components in a substation.
- Assist in the following tests:
Transformer Testing – Power factor, TTR, insulation resistance, SFRA, winding resistance, partial discharge, and leakage reactance;
Cable Testing – Insulation resistance, tan delta, hipot, TDR, partial discharge, cable thumper;
Circuit Breaker Testing – Insulation resistance, contact resistance, power factor, breaker timing, SF6 gas analysis, CT testing, high current testing, secondary injection testing, and vacuum bottle integrity testing. - Participate in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment.
- Attend safety meetings and training.
- Familiar with industry standards such as NETA, NFPA 70E, OSHA compliance standards, safety laws, and DOT regulations.
- Ability to assist with complex mechanical and electrical problems.
- Strong communication and problem‑solving skills.
- Strong PC skills including email, internet, data entry, and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work well under pressure to meet goals and deadlines.
- Knowledge of Doble DTAF and Power DB is preferred; training will be provided.
- Consistently on time for daily work assignments, meetings, and training.
- Organizational skills for timely reporting of time and expenses, weekly status reports, and documentation.
- Responsible for maintaining tools, test equipment, and vehicles in clean, organized condition and keeping them up to date with service and calibrations.
- Willing to relocate within 60 miles of the regional office.
- Corporate business hours Monday‑Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; may require work outside of business hours.
- Work in close but safe proximity to live electrical substations.
- Willing to work overtime, including nights, weekends, and some holidays.
- Willing to travel on overnight, multi‑day, out‑of‑town projects.
- Rotate emergency on‑call duty and respond to customer emergencies promptly.
- High School Diploma or GED required;
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Technology preferred but not required. - Experience in electrical substation testing, construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, assembly, and commissioning is preferred but not required.
- Other useful experience includes mechanical aptitude and an attitude eager to learn.
- Pass a pre‑employment criminal background check and motor vehicle check.
- Pass a pre‑employment drug and alcohol test, as well as periodic, unannounced random testing.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to obtain an endorsement for operating a combined vehicle up to 26 k lbs.
- Ability to lift and maneuver at least 50 lbs.
- Willing to obtain a company‑paid TWIC card, OSHA 10/30‑hour, MSHA, NFPA 70E, and CPR training.
