Nature of WorkThe Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician I will perform routine repair and maintenance work of motor vehicles, heavy equipment, and power tools utilized by the maintenance shop to conduct routine and emergency maintenance of SHA highways, bridges and right‑of‑way areas. Responsibilities include mechanical repairs at the journey level, diagnosing system malfunctions, performing standard preventive maintenance services, and assisting with major automotive repairs.
EducationGraduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
ExperienceOne and one‑half (1.5) years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy‑duty construction equipment.
Notes- Applicants may substitute additional documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
- Completion of an accredited training program for heavy equipment or diesel repair may be substituted for one and one‑half years of the general experience. The accrediting body must be listed on the U.S. Department of Education’s Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.
- U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education and experience.
- Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for two years of the required education. The two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered an integral part of this substitution and cannot also be considered separately to meet education or experience minimum qualifications.
- Certification as a Master Technician in one or more subject areas by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.
- Employees must possess and maintain a Class C motor vehicle operator’s license valid in Maryland. Applicants must list license number and expiration date on the application.
- During the probationary period employees are required to possess and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License valid in Maryland.
- Employees may be required to obtain Special Commercial Driver’s License endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles depending on the equipment operated.
- Employees will be required to successfully complete agency certification programs to be eligible for permanent status in this classification.
- Employees must be available for duty at various hours, day or night, to maintain continuous operation of a facility.
- Employees may be on call 24 hours a day and must maintain a reliable communication link for emergency call‑back requirements.
- Employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead‑based paint or chromium may need periodic medical testing and must be able to wear a respirator.
- Candidates are subject to pre‑employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11.
- Employees are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11.
