position overview

the apprentice i is the entry level in which incumbents learn and perform tasks in the designated skilled trade area (hvac/r) within the department of maintenance. While working under the direction of a licensed journey-level or higher position, the apprentice i performs routine work in maintenance, service, and repair tasks in the trade. The work includes providing preventative maintenance for the equipment/systems, learning how to install and repair of equipment/systems, entering records related to time, materials and costs in the database system, as well as maintaining a clean and safe work area.

the apprentice i and apprentice ii job class correlates with a four (4)-year apprentice program in which the employee accumulates the necessary training and skills to attain the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (hvac/r) or plumbing journeyperson's license. Despite the link to the apprentice program, no employment contract is implied. Employees in this position shall enroll and remain active in a state-registered, time-based apprentice program.

Employees are eligible to move into an apprentice ii position upon completion and approval of the fcps apprentice training plan.

employees in these job classes will receive structured and supervised on-the-job training while serving as a full-time benefitted employee of the frederick county public schools (fcps) and will also complete related instruction, as offered by a state registered apprentice program sponsor. Expenses for the program sponsors related instruction will be covered by fcps, to the extent permitted by the support staff tuition benefits.

The employees work schedule may be altered to allow for the attendance of related instruction during work hours, exclusive of travel.

essential functions
  • instructional time and/or participates and attend training related to tools, safety, and compliance.
  • learns and assists in providing preventive maintenance by inspecting, testing and servicing heating, cooling and ventilation equipment.
  • learns and assists in troubleshooting and implementing repairs on building equipment and related equipment.
  • maintains work area in a clean, safe and sanitary manner and that all work is performed in accordance with osha trade-specific, and fcps standards, policies, and procedures.
  • travels frequently between facilities, operating vehicles in accordance with fcps regulations.
  • documents the cost of repairs and services by keeping records of time materials to be charged to each job using cmms and providing updates to the designated supervisors regarding the status of work projects, material consumed and man-hours utilized.

required qualifications
  • high school diploma, ged equivalent, or currently enrolled in a program to achieve this within twelve (12) months.
  • valid driver's license and the ability to operate a vehicle in accordance with board of education policies.
  • maintain a current state of maryland apprentice license.
preferred qualifications
  • experience in the trade field.
  • application and use of testing equipment used in checking, testing, and analyzing licensed trade systems.
  • methods, materials, tools, safety practices, and equipment used in the trade.
