the apprentice i is the entry‑level position in which incumbents learn and perform tasks in the designated hvac/r trade area within the department of maintenance. While working under the direction of a licensed journeylaw or higher position, the apprentice i performs routine work in maintenance, service, and repair tasks in the trade. The work includes providing preventative maintenance for equipment and systems, learning how to install and repair equipment, entering records related to time, materials, and costs in the database system, and maintaining a clean and safe work area.
the apprentice i and apprentice ii job classes correspond to a four‑year apprentice program in which the employee accumulates training and skills to obtain a heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (hvac/r) or plumbing journeyperson's license. Employees are expected to enroll and remain active in a state‑registered, time‑based apprentice program. Employees may be promoted to apprentice ii upon completion and approval of the fcps apprentice training plan.

- participate in instructional time and training related to tools, safety, and compliance.
- learn and assist in providing preventive maintenance by inspecting, testing, and servicing heating, cooling, and ventilation equipment.
- learn and assist in troubleshooting and implementing repairs on building equipment and related systems.
- maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary work area in accordance with osha trade‑specific standards, fcps policies, and procedures.
- frequently travel between facilities, operating vehicles in accordance with fcps regulations.
- document the cost of repairs and services by keeping records of time and materials to be charged to each job using cmms and providing updates to supervisors regarding the status of work projects, material consumed, and man‑hours utilized.

required qualifications- high school diploma, ged equivalent, or currently enrolled in a program to achieve this within twelve months.
- valid driver’s license and ability to operate a vehicle in accordance with board of education policies.
- maintain a current state of maryland apprentice license.
- experience in the trade field.
- application and use of testing equipment used in checking, testing, and analyzing licensed trade systems.
- knowledge of methods, materials, tools, safety practices, and equipment used in the trade.
- knowledge of applicable safety codes, ordinances, and regulations.
- knowledge and use of culturally responsive practices.
- ability to understand and apply written communication skills.
- ability to safely and effectively use hand and power tools and equipment used in the hvac/r trade.
- ability to troubleshoot and maintain mechanical, electrical, and environmental systems and subsystems, including control and balancing of these systems.
- proficiency with computerized systems including cmms, office software, and building automation systems.
- ability to read and work from blueprints, e‑manuals, technical manuals, charts, and schematics.
- ability to maintain accurate records and reports on completed assignments.
