Position: Facility Maintenance Technician I

FACILITY MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I (GRADE
7)

Role Overview

This is the entry level of maintenance and construction work on facilities such as bridges, buildings, bulkheads, highways, parking areas, piers, railroads, ramps, roads, taxiways, tunnels, or adjacent areas of the Maryland Department of Transportation. Employees utilize tools, operate motorized equipment, and perform manual tasks essential to the upkeep and appearance of a facility. Employees work independently or as members of a crew and may work within a specialized trade.

Employees do not supervise but may provide guidance, instruction, and assistance to other employees.

Incumbents receive general supervision from a Facility Maintenance Technician IV or other designated official. This work requires physical exertion and may be performed outdoors under all weather conditions or inside an MDOT building. Some assignments may involve moving objects weighing over 50 pounds, working at high elevations, or performing duties in cramped quarters in buildings or underground. Employees in this class are considered essential employees and may be on call 24 hours a day.

Rotating shift work, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, may be required.

Minimum Qualification

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: None.

License: Must possess a Class C motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland with fewer than four (4) points. During the probationary period, a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and a U.S. DOT Medical Card (or MVA‑issued waiver) must be obtained and maintained. Employees must also meet all Department of Budget and Management policies required for operation of state‑owned vehicles.

Training

and Certification

Employees must complete the training and certification program required by the employing administration during the probationary period and continue to meet these requirements to be eligible for advancement or transfer to another administration.

Employment Conditions

Employees must be willing and available for duty at any hour, day or night, and may be required to maintain a reliable communication link for emergency call‑back purposes at their own expense.

Employees working with hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead‑based paint, or chromium may be required to undergo periodic medical testing, pass hazardous materials training, and wear a respirator.

Employees in this classification are considered “Essential Employees” and may be required to sign and agree to all policies and procedures relating to “Essential Employee” status.

All candidates will be required to undergo pre‑employment and substance abuse drug testing in accordance with applicable regulations.
