Job Brief

Certified HVAC Technician required to provide technical support to our government customer located in Ft. Detrick, Maryland
.
- Maintain technical competency of mechanical equipment, engineering principles, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), plumbing and heating systems.
- Receive assignments with minimum instructions concerning work methods to be used; work directly with engineers, research or testing personnel while planning and modifying systems to meet specific conditions. Expected to perform repair and modification to meet conditions required by technical personnel.
- Test, repair, modify, calculate, operate, maintain, overhaul and calibrate small to large industrial air conditioning units, refrigeration coolers and freezers, chiller systems, humidification and dehumidification systems, air cleaners, heat pumps, clean room systems, ventilation and exhaust systems, pneumatic systems, propane, steam and electrical heating systems, small to 150 horsepower reciprocating and screw compressors, electrical lines, circuits, systems, subsystems, controls and fixtures with relays, switches, receptacles, and controllers.
- Troubleshoot, install, test, repair, modify, relocate, maintain, and calibrate refrigeration equipment, air conditioning equipment, pneumatics controls, DDC controls, VAV systems during malfunctions and for daily operations.
- Troubleshoot, maintain, build graphics, upgrade controllers, program, upload/download and calibrate DDC controls to include JCI Metasys, Honeywell Tritium and Schneider Electric Continuum systems in a laboratory environment.
- Maintain, verify and correct issues on equipment to include freezers, refrigerators, walk‑ins, pressure, temperature, humidity and light sensors; maintain detailed maintenance and service reports/logs in accordance with institute SOPs and regulatory compliance procedures. Follow all institute standard operating procedures, safety, security and practice while repairing and maintaining the building’s HVAC/R systems and equipment. Ensure all EPA rules and regulations pertaining to refrigeration and air conditioning systems outlined in 40 CFR Part 82 Sub Part
F. - Interpret diagrams, drawings, technical manuals and other instructions for air conditioning equipment, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings and use trade formulas.
- Maintain and troubleshoot a variety of complex electrical systems and equipment such as series, parallel, and compound circuits for single and multiple phase alternating current of varying voltage, amperage and frequency; wiring systems in industrial complexes and in buildings; and power or regulating and control circuits and distribution panels to industrial machinery, computers, clean rooms or other electrical equipment.
- Use tools and equipment, including sliding squares, measuring tapes, grinders, power tools, cutters, pipe wrenches, volt, amp, ohm meters, thermometers, torches, computers, manometers, airflow measuring equipment, vacuum pumps and various hand tools.
- Utilize air balance principles and equipment to rebalance VAVs, Phoenix valves, dampers, and fan coil units for office, animal rooms and laboratories throughout the facility as required.
- Perform work in bio‑containment suites (BSL‑3 and BSL‑4) in the presence of highly hazardous infectious agents and toxins and participate in Bio‑surety Personnel Reliability System and Formaldehyde Program. Work within the Formaldehyde program includes clearing airlocks and penthouse spaces after decontamination as well as airlock washdowns.
- Assure that work assignments, procedures, sequences, methods, and deadlines are completed on time.
- Responsible for independently planning and carrying out assignments based on the purpose and use of the end item.
- May be required to work on second or third shift with little notice and will serve as an on‑call technician for one‑week periods during regular shop rotations.
- Mechanic must be able to be contacted and respond to emergency calls during on‑call periods within one hour.
