Position: MAINTENANCE MECHANIC

Overview

Maryland School for the Deaf provides an inclusive, language‑rich environment for deaf and hard of hearing students from birth through age 21. Position Overview

This 12‑month essential personnel position in the maintenance department at the Frederick campus involves performing general maintenance tasks, including simple construction, preventative maintenance, improvements, and minor repairs to buildings, fixtures, mechanical equipment, grounds, and roadways.

Responsibilities
  • Perform scheduled maintenance services and minor repairs to building equipment, including air conditioning systems, boilers, hydraulic systems, circulator pumps, air handler units, electric pump motors, refrigeration equipment, exhaust fans, cooling towers, and ice chillers.
  • Clean and lubricate pump and motor bearings, adjust motor belt tension and replace equipment filters.
  • Maintain mechanical and equipment room spaces by sweeping, mopping, and wiping down equipment.
  • Conduct daily inspections of the physical plant and utility operations to ensure reliability and safety.
  • Repair plumbing and heating system components, lavatory fixtures, hand sinks, and water fountains; unclog toilets, sinks, and drains; replace enclosure components and panels.
  • Perform carpentry repairs, including furniture repair, interior wall construction, framing, drywall, door hanging, window replacement, cabinet installation, and apply finishes or paint.
  • Carry out masonry tasks for interior or exterior repairs of sheet rock, block walls, concrete slabs, walkways, asphalt paving.
  • Perform minor electrical repairs, replace covers, light bulbs, fixtures, assist with troubleshooting and installing new conduit, wiring, and switches.
  • Maintain grounds through mowing, trimming, pruning, planting, mulching, weeding, watering, clean walkways, building surfaces, gutters, and snow/ice removal.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (eighth grade minimum). Three years of experience in maintenance trades, with at least two years primarily in electricity, plumbing, steam fittings, refrigeration or air‑conditioning.
  • Alternative qualifications: up to three years of additional trade experience can substitute required education; an accredited vocational or technical high school degree in Building Maintenance or related field can substitute experience; U.S. Armed Forces service in relevant utilities repair or construction/engineering specialties can substitute experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience in facilities maintenance or related trades.
  • Willingness to learn American Sign Language.
  • Ability to lift 50 lb. or more.
  • Ability to assist with snow removal on campus.
Licenses & Certifications

Employees may be required to operate motor vehicles; a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license is required for duties involving vehicle operation.

Special Requirements

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense. Candidates must provide three letters of recommendation.
