Program Description

The Vaccine Clinical Materials Program (VCMP), part of Leidos Biomedical Research at the Frederick National Lab, supports the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Vaccine Research Center (VRC). Its mission is to advance preclinical and clinical research, product development, and manufacture of novel clinical-stage vaccines and biologics to address current and/or emerging infectious diseases of global significance (e.g., HIV-AIDS, Influenza, Ebola, Malaria, Novel Coronavirus, Tuberculosis).

The VCMP is responsible for the operation of a Frederick MD
-based pilot plant facility and is actively engaged in cGMP manufacture, testing, release, and supply of Phase I /II clinical products for investigational use in the US and globally.

Key Roles/Responsibilities
  • The work hours for this position will be 6:30am to 3:00pm.
  • Installs, services, rebuilds, and repairs commercial and industrial air-conditioning and refrigeration systems in accordance with applicable codes and safety requirements.
  • Performs periodic inspections to identify, diagnose, and correct equipment malfunctions.
  • Performs preventive maintenance to reduce equipment failures involving refrigeration compressors, evaporators, condensers, pneumatic and electrical controls, pumps, fans, and heating-water systems.
  • Accurately charges air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, performs leak testing, evaluates and adjusts refrigerant metering devices to ensure proper system operation.
  • Fabricates, assembles, and installs ductwork as needed.
  • Performs repairs and component replacement on heating-water system including, circulating pumps, motors, valves, and other associated mechanical equipment.
  • May be required to service and maintain Building Automation Systems (BAS), including monitoring system operation, adjusting setpoints and component replacement as needed.
  • May be required to install, service, and maintain cleanroom HVAC systems, including temperature, humidity, pressure, filtration, and airflow controls, in accordance with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) requirements, approved procedures, and documentation standards.
  • Operates and repairs cGMP air handlers, roof mounted exhaust fans, reheat coils, cabinet heating systems, and heating hot water distribution systems.
  • Replaces belts, sheaves, motors and bearings as required on air handling equipment and exhaust fans.
  • Assists with the maintenance and repair of biosafety cabinets, CO₂ incubators, clean-in-place (CIP) and steam-in-place (SIP) systems, fan coil units, chilled-water and heating-water control valves, pneumatic controls, domestic hot-water systems, and equipment connected to emergency power systems.
  • Will train on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and keep training current as required.
  • Assists other trades personnel with maintenance and repair work when additional support is needed to safely and efficiently complete the task.
Basic Qualifications
  • Possession of a high school diploma.
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of two (2) years of HVAC-related experience is required.
  • Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting chilled‑water distribution loops
  • Experience with heating‑water system repair and replacement.
  • Knowledge of high‑tonnage air‑conditioning and refrigeration systems, including various types of refrigeration compressors; pneumatic, electronic, mechanical, and building automation controls; including piping system practices associated with HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
