D. Noyes Children’s Center, 9925 Blackwell Rd, Rockville, MD 20850 (Montgomery County). This position may require assignment to multiple sites to provide systemic support.
The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) is dedicated to transforming young lives, creating safer communities, and fostering equitable systems. The School Social Worker helps students and families make the best use of available opportunities and resources, fully developing each student’s individual potential. The worker brings an understanding of the psychosocial development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences as they interact with the educational process.
The incumbent will maintain a presence in the school and engage with students and staff.
- Identify and address reasons why some students are not successful, including at‑risk factors, dropping out, and trauma.
- Assist teachers and families in alleviating adverse conditions to promote resilience and academic success for at‑risk students.
- Help parents and school personnel utilize school and community resources to maximize students’ educational abilities.
- Promote parental involvement with the school to create positive academic and social outcomes.
- Listen to and respect the feelings and sensitivities of students and parents from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Support education that helps students overcome social and emotional problems interfering with adjustment and achievement.
- Provide special education and related services for students with physical, mental, social, emotional, or other educational disabilities.
- Advance social justice and equal opportunity for all students and families.
- Determined by the State Board of Social Work Examiners under licensing requirements for Social Workers.
- Experience:
None required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Holder or eligible for School Social Worker Certification issued by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). (Attach copy of certification to application.)
- Previous experience with children and a special‑needs population.
- Experience with educational agencies and interdisciplinary teams.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Interpersonal skills that facilitate effective communication and positive interactions with students.
- Licensed as a Graduate Social Worker (by June 30, 2018) or Master Social Worker (by July 1, 2018), or Certified Social Worker / Certified Social Worker‑Clinical by the State Board of Social Work Examiners before appointment. Applicants without a license may apply pending receipt of the required license. Submit a copy once obtained.
- MUST possess a valid motor‑vehicle operator’s license if duties involve operation of a motor vehicle.
- Meet mandatory standards for continuing education as determined by the hiring department. Failure to obtain required credits may result in disciplinary action.
- Complete an approved training program in group counseling techniques.
- May be required to complete the Level I Counseling course certified by the Maryland AIDS Professional Education Center.
- Complete the Entry Level Training Academy operated by the Police and Correctional Training Commissions.
