Location of Position
Garrett County – Backbone Mountain Youth Center (BMYC), 124 Camp 4 Road, Swanton, MD 21561;
Allegany County – Green Ridge Youth Center (GRYC), 10700 Fifteen Mile Creek Road, Flintstone, MD 21530.
Join DJS as a Resident Advisor Trainee to provide supervision, guidance, and support for youth in a facility, ensuring safety, fostering learning, and promoting positive behaviors.
Position Duties- Escort and supervise youth to daily activities and interactions.
- Observe individual and group behaviors to determine when intervention or guidance is needed.
- De‑escalate potentially harmful behaviors and intervene in situations involving agitated youth.
- Suggest alternative responses to problems and, when necessary, restrain youth.
- Create a learning environment that encourages communication, group discussion, and mentorship.
- Assist youth in complying with daily schedules, classes, and personal hygiene.
- Record behavior observations, prepare progress and incident reports, and recommend sanctions.
- Inspect residence areas for safety, security and cleanliness.
- Assess inappropriate behaviors and recommend sanctions.
- Attend in‑service training on crisis prevention, suicide prevention, emergency medical treatments, and behavioral models; obtain and maintain certification.
- Assess emergency and crisis situations, make contacts and referrals, and provide interim assistance.
- May be assigned a cottage or dormitory post at night and may accompany youth to community activities.
- Perform other related duties.
- Act as a member of the treatment team and provide input to case management specialists.
- Help evaluate and recommend modifications to youth treatment plans.
- Facilitate daily behavioral modification meetings in the absence of the case management specialist.
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high‑school equivalency certificate.
- No experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Employment experience within the past 18 months.
- Associate’s degree in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Social or Behavioral Sciences).
- Completion and successful passing of the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course during probation.
- Possession of a valid U.S. motor vehicle operator’s license if assigned duties requiring a vehicle.
- U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status.
- Age of at least 21 years.
- Thorough background check, including fingerprinting and drug testing.
- Oral interview; physical and psychological examinations.
- Subject to substance abuse testing per Code of Maryland Regulations.
