About the position

We are seeking a Limited Term Grant Funded (LTGF) Victim Services Assistant (Administrative Aide 1G, grade G13) to join the Victim Services Unit. This entry‑level secretarial/administrative role involves assisting the unit with daily operations and serving as the primary point of contact for primary and secondary victims and witnesses. The assistant will handle compensation claims, case status updates, community outreach, and related duties under direction.

The Prince George’s County Police Department is the fourth largest law enforcement agency in Maryland. It provides a full range of law‑enforcement services to over 900,000 residents and business owners. The department works in partnership with citizens to maintain a safe environment and enhance quality of life.

Responsibilities
  • Answer incoming phone calls and respond to office correspondence to obtain up‑to‑date information for victims and witnesses.
  • Prepare correspondence to victims, witnesses, and police officers to provide case status updates and resource information.
  • Conduct intake assessments to determine victim needs and prepare findings for the Victim Services Coordinator.
  • Follow up with victims, witnesses, and partnering agencies to confirm services rendered.
  • Assist and track primary and secondary victim CICB (Criminal Injuries Compensation Board) applications.
  • Maintain accurate notes in the case‑management system.
  • Sends out and processes all mail, including returned mail, for the Victim Services Coordinator.
  • Track upcoming cases for Crime Victim Notification to determine if the coordinator should notify victims of hearings.
  • Assist with preparation of reports for Criminal Investigations Division commanders and grant compliance, including data collection and analysis.
  • Perform other duties within the scope of this classification as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate with coursework in typing, office practices, or related clerical subjects.
  • One (1) year of advanced diverse and/or technical clerical experience involving public service for at least six (6) months.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, social work, human services, sociology, or a related field.
  • At least one year of experience providing services to victims of crimes or working within the criminal justice system.
  • Two years of administrative experience.
  • Bi‑lingual (Spanish and/or other languages) strongly preferred.
  • Ability to establish a professional rapport with police personnel, supervisors, the community, outside agencies, and bereavement programs.
  • Excellent crisis intervention and communication skills for difficult or sensitive information.
  • Knowledge of law‑enforcement and crime‑victim advocacy, including trauma‑informed practices.
  • Ability to work efficiently under stress in a trauma‑induced environment.
  • Initiative, independence, multi‑tasking, and teamwork capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including public speaking.
  • Effective interaction with a diverse population and understanding of victimization responses.
  • Facilitation of referrals to appropriate services and agencies.
  • Ability to accept time‑sensitive tasks promptly.
Additional Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to complete and pass an online Administrative Aide examination. Those who have taken and passed the exam on or after 8/1/2024 need not retest.

  • Successfully pass pre‑employment checks, including reference, background, and drug screenings as required.
  • Serve as an essential employee, reporting as needed during standard or non‑standard hours, and remaining at work during emergencies or administrative leave.
