Position Summary

The Prince George’s County Police Department is currently seeking a Limited Term Grant Funded Victim Services Assistant (Administrative Aide 1G), grade G13, within the Victim Services Unit. This entry‑level secretarial/administrative position serves as the primary point of contact for the Victim Services Unit and assists primary and secondary victims and witnesses with compensation claims, case status updates, community awareness, and related duties.

Good judgment, discretion, and the ability to handle confidential information are essential.

Responsibilities
  • Answer incoming phone calls and respond to office correspondence to obtain up-to-date information for victims and witnesses.
  • Prepare correspondence to victims, witnesses, and police officers to provide case status updates and resource information.
  • Conduct intake assessments to determine victims’ needs and provide findings to the Victim Services Coordinator.
  • Follow up with victims, witnesses, and partnering agencies to confirm services rendered.
  • Assist and track primary and secondary victims’ CICB (Criminal Injuries Compensation Board) applications.
  • Maintain accurate notes in the case management system.
  • Send and process all mail, including returned mail, to the Victim Services Coordinator.
  • Track upcoming cases for Crime Victim Notification to determine if the Victim Services Coordinator should notify victims of hearings.
  • Assist with the preparation of reports for Criminal Investigations Division commanders and grant compliance, including gathering and analyzing statistics.
  • Perform other duties that fall within the responsibilities of this classification.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate with coursework in typing, office practices, or related clerical subjects.
  • At least one (1) year of advanced diverse and/or technical clerical experience involving public interaction for a minimum of six (6) months.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, social work, human services, sociology, or a related field.
  • At least one year of experience providing services to victims of crimes or working within the criminal justice system.
  • Two years of administrative experience.
  • Bi‑lingual, preferably Spanish and/or other languages.
  • Ability to establish a professional rapport with police personnel, supervisors, the community, outside agencies, and bereavement programs.
  • Excellent crisis intervention skills.
  • Ability to communicate difficult or sensitive information.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement/criminal justice and trauma‑informed victim advocacy.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a stressful, trauma‑induced environment.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, balance multiple cases, set priorities, and work autonomously while also functioning as a team member.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Ability to effectively interact with a diverse population.
  • Full understanding of the dimensions of response to victimization.
  • Ability to facilitate referrals to appropriate services and agencies.
  • Ability to receive and complete time‑sensitive tasks.
Additional Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to complete and pass an online Administrative Aide examination. Applicants who have taken and passed the exam on or after 8/1/2024 will not be required to re‑test; previous passing scores will be applied.
