Overview

Banner Life Insurance Company is a leading digital life insurance platform provider. We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to design and build scalable, efficient, and cost‑effective services across multiple product teams.

Responsibilities
  • Drive multiple projects through delivery, removing obstacles as needed.
  • Gain a working understanding of Banner Life as a business and collaborate with leaders to contribute to cohesive end‑to‑end customer experiences.
  • Design and develop web‑based applications and micro‑services across front‑and back‑end technologies, including technical design, coding, and unit testing.
  • Lead improvements to software engineering practices.
  • Identify changes to improve customer/partner experience through a data‑driven approach.
  • Maintain knowledge of corporate security procedures and policies for implementation, auditing, and documentation.
  • Mentor and train software engineering team members and contractors.
  • Keep up to date with industry trends and apply to projects as appropriate.
  • Recommend business solutions comparing building versus low‑code/no‑code options.
  • Prepare technical documentation and lead code reviews to ensure code meets internal standards and best practices.
  • Research new technologies and propose solutions that facilitate business processing and reduce costs.
Education
  • BS or MS in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
Experience & Knowledge
  • 10+ years of software design and development experience with backend services.
  • 10+ years hands‑on experience in an object‑oriented language; C# preferred.
  • 3+ years of designing distributed systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical details clearly across organizational boundaries.
  • Experience in Dev Ops to maintain live services or application frameworks.
  • Cloud experience, with Azure highly desirable.
  • Excellent analytical skills with a systematic approach to software design.
  • Passion for building highly scalable, reliable services.
  • Experience with Agile and interactive development processes.
  • Clear understanding of software development life cycle procedures and processes, including Agile methodologies.

  • Typescript and JavaScript frameworks (jQuery, Angular, etc.).
  • Unit testing frameworks (nUnit, MSTest, Jasmine, Karma).
  • Jira and Confluence.
  • Version control with Git or Bit Bucket.
  • Docker and Kubernetes (or other container technologies).
  • Application deployment in the cloud (Azure, AWS, GCP).
Preferred Certifications
  • Microsoft Azure Fundamentals AZ‑900.
  • Microsoft Azure Developer Associate AZ‑204.
Benefits

The expected hiring compensation range for this position is $141,300 – $194,300 annually. This is a hybrid opportunity based in Frederick, MD. Total compensation may include a sign‑on bonus, long‑term incentives, and annual bonuses. Eligibility to participate in the Annual Incentive Plan, with a target payment of 20% of base salary. This role has 20 vacation days, 10 sick days accrued bi‑weekly, and 9 paid holidays per year.
